The fragrant flowers of Paulownia tomentosa (foxglove tree, princess tree) appear before the foliage making them appear even more dramatic. This broad, deciduous tree has large leaves which can be even larger if the plant is coppiced or pollarded, though both pruning methods will reduce flowering. These trees are very tolerant of atmospheric pollution. This young tree was proving popular with the local bumblebees.

This Paulownia tomentosa (foxglove tree, princess tree) was covered in the round, bronze buds that will develop into fragrant, lilac-purple flowers on large panicles in summer. This broad, deciduous tree also had the remains of the thin, woody seedcases from last year’s flowers.
