The fragrance of the blooms of Prunus mume (Japanese apricot) was filling a sunny, late winter day at Hodsock Priory, Nottinghamshire. This deciduous tree species has green young stems that contrast with light to dark pink flowers which are produced on bare branches in late winter. These are followed by edible but sour, apricot-like, yellow fruit.

Enjoying a sunny, sheltered site next to an old glasshouse at Hodsock Priory, Nottinghamshire, was Coronilla valentina subsp. glauca 'Citrina' (bastard senna). This small evergreen shrub has blue-grey, pinnate leaves with clusters of small, fragrant, yellow flowers in late winter, early spring and again in late summer. The flowers are followed by small, slender pods.

The flowers of Crocus tommasinianus (early crocus, woodland crocus, snow crocus) provide an early source of vital pollen and nectar for foraging bees in late winter. This species flowers early and can easily become naturalised in borders and lawns and will spread by self-sowing. There are a number of cultivars including Crocus tommasinianus f. albus, which has white flowers. In my garden they flower in the lawn with the Galanthus (snowdrops) and here at Hodsock Priory, Nottinghamshire, they had naturalised in this border at the base of a sunny wall. The bees had flown in from some examples of historic hives in the garden.

In the deciduous woodlands of Hodsock Priory, Nottinghamshire, there was a carpet of Galanthus nivalis f. pleniflorus 'Flore Pleno' (double snowdrop). This bulbous perennial has fragrant, double white flowers with the inner segments marked with green. Sadly the snowdrop season is coming to an end this year but spring is on the way...

Even at the end of winter the Chimonanthus praecox 'Luteus' (yellow wintersweet) is still producing a display and filling the air with scent. The cultivar of this deciduous shrub has highly fragrant, waxy yellow flowers throughout the winter.

The Lonicera x purpusii (winter honeysuckle) seems to have been flowering and filling the air with scent for months. This strongly-growing, deciduous shrub has flowers thrughout the winter and early spring. It is attractive to insects and provides a source of nectar for bumblebees, which have been come out of hibernation during spells of warm weather.

This Paulownia tomentosa (foxglove tree, princess tree) was covered in the round, bronze buds that will develop into fragrant, lilac-purple flowers on large panicles in summer. This broad, deciduous tree also had the remains of the thin, woody seedcases from last year’s flowers.
