NEW ABSTRACT
According to Sight Unseen the New Abstract expo at The Printhouse Gallery represents something of a re-birth of a design movement, based on the internet age.
Whilst the Sight Unseen piece doesn't necessarily declare New Abstract a New Movement it describes the work in terms of the digital generation. Ceramics, Print and Paint show texture through pattern - worth seeing in reality to get beyond a virtual impression of it's impact surely?
For me these works borrow from modernity, the abstract expressionists; Matisse's 1952 collage work L'Escargot for instance. The pre-cursor to the graphic aesthetics of the tumblr generation which these New Abstract works are mooted to represent.
