I knew about Priscilla before going into The Long Walk. I had seen discussion about it before the movie release and after. I, however, was not prepared for Pete’s actual retelling of the story.

I figured that Pete would not take full responsibility, I did not expect the downright cruel dialogue. the way he diminished the way he hurt her or tried to hurt her. like in one moment admit that he was trying to hurt her and the next say that she was crazy.

I can’t quote the whole section here as it takes, like, 3 or 4 pages, but here’s the ending bit.

warning for attempted rape in case you didn’t know that:

“I tried to take her to bed and she cut my face open with a letter-opener. …She cut me like I was trying to rape her. Like I was germs and I’d infect her. …”

…

“I cried, McVries said. “I cried like a baby. I got down on my knees and held her skirt and begged her to forgive me, and all the blood was getting on the floor … She gagged and ran off into the bathroom. She threw up. I could hear her throwing up. When she came out, she had a towel for my face. She said she never wanted to see me again. She was crying. She asked me why I’d done that to her, hurt her like that. She said I had no right. There I was, Ray, with my face cut wide open and she’s asking me why I hurt her.”

…

“She really was mental, Ray.”

and, to be clear, that was after admitting near the start of the whole rant that “she didn’t really want to screw, but she wanted to please me.”

he started it all by saying Pris turned out to be a real bitch too. so the amount of guilt that is there is not enough.

there is one more thing I wanted to say about this though and quote one more thing. at the end of the whole rant, Ray does not put himself into Pete’s shoes, he puts himself into Priscilla’s.

“Why are you here, Garraty?” “I don’t know.” His voice mechanical, doll-like. … And later (or earlier… all of his past was mixed up and fluid now) he had hit his best friend in the mouth with the barrel of an air rifle. Maybe he had a scar like McVries. Jimmy. He and Jimmy had been playing doctor.

I just think it’s interesting that Ray despite being a 16-year-old in a very misogynistic world and who is very attached to Pete, thought not about if Pete was right or wrong, but wether or not he had done a similar thing as Pris.

especially because of how Ray’s first queer experience with Jimmy is framed. like I think part of it was definitely internalized homophobia and how his mom reacted, but the fact that they were both five and it being framed against this story in particular is just…

there’s also the fact that at first Ray is adamant that hitting Jimmy was an accident and then later he admits that it was very much of purpose.

I could make a whole separate post about Ray/Jimmy and how that experience seemed to shape Ray’s relationship with queerness going forward. frankly this post is about multiple different things because I have so many thoughts.
