big overview of his background (i hold an undying hatred for the Canucks in my heart bc of this tbh. i know it was a long time ago and everyone involved is no longer with the team. but i do not care.)

also. if you care about this kind of thing (i think you might). he and Ebs have been linemates for most of their time with the Kraken and they’re very close (Ebs was one of his groomsmen when he got married this summer). one time he kissed Ebs on the helmet after Ebs scored his first goal of the season in OT and it’s been in like every team highlight reel since then. also last year we were very scared that the Kraken were going to trade Ebs shortly before his 1000th game but they wound up extending him instead (on the anniversary of Canner’s extension, which i’m totally Normal about) and Canner was very visibly and verbally relieved about the whole situation. i’m just saying. there are Narratives.

oooh yes this one! is actually a fic I'm cowriting with @ameliarating (slowly) that is post-canon felix/mildmay because, well. because we can, I suppose. because it seemed like it'd be fun to play with, in particular, mildmay starting to have Wants after everything is, like. resolved and settled and fine, and better, because he's convinced felix that sex and love are not inextricably intertwined. and now here he is. and just making the messy incesty nonsense of our dreams

I gathered myself and made a valiant attempt at normalcy. It was easier if I tried to think of it as for Mildmay’s sake, though I still felt hopelessly obsessed, excruciatingly aware of everything he did, every reaction to me, every interaction we had. I couldn’t stop myself. This blush, that look...I was an ingenue pining, and I did not enjoy the feeling. Mildmay was strong enough to get out of bed and I could see how grateful he was for it. I was reluctant to let him outside when it was still cold as it was, but he did not appreciate my hesitation. “You can’t keep me locked up like the Lady in the Tower,” he said. “Couldn’t I?” I said lightly, and didn’t know what possessed me to add, “I think I’d make a very dashing wicked prince.”  Mildmay looked for a moment like I’d clubbed him over the head, his eyes going a little wide as he blinked at me, and then turned a curious shade of red and said simply, “um.”

“Awake, are you? Then you can tell me who you are.”

Oh, yes. He apparently he wasn’t alone. “I am-” Loki realized that he wasn’t actually sure how to answer that question. “Loki,” he said, finally, because at least that name was still his. 

“Loki,” she said. “A name is a start. And where are you from? Who are your people, and how did you fall here?” 

“I - have no people,” he said haltingly. “As for how...I do not know. I fell. And then I landed. That’s all I know. If you are going to kill me, by all means-”

“Rather obsessed with that, aren’t you.” She stood up, impeccably graceful, and prowled over to him. “What people did you belong to? Surely you were born to someone, and lived somewhere.” 

Loki hesitated, suddenly thinking to wonder what this woman had been imprisoned for. “It doesn’t matter,” he said, though a moment after he wasn’t certain why he was bothering to try to protect Asgard. Asgard had thrown him out. Odin had turned his back, and Thor…

He veered away from those thoughts. 

“It matters to me,” the woman said, her eyes boring into him. “And if you do not answer me, I’ll stop asking politely.”

help i’m DYING to talk abt felix+malkar... in corambis felix mentions learning to read from broadsheets - i always imagined malkar taught him to read - tho i guess he’s smart enough to have mostly taught himself - it’s hard to imagine malkar as a very involved teacher - do you think he would set felix up with material and then leave him to teach himself? was felix alone a lot during those years - or was he always with malkar because of the binding, like how mildmay has to always be with felix?

Can I just say that I love that I’m getting Doctrine of Labyrinths asks now?

I think Malkar was actually very involved in Felix’s education. After all, he’s very invested in the idea of Felix being able to pass for respectable such that he can become a Cabaline wizard, and therefore be positioned where Malkar needs him to be. I think he’d be very demanding, very exacting, and expect Felix to pick things up fast - which he’s capable of doing, especially since there are consequences when he doesn’t. 

I think of Malkar during this period of time keeping a pretty tight leash and control over most aspects of Felix’s life, because conditioning him appropriately requires it, and because it’s a good way to keep his control not just over Felix’s life but over Felix himself. 

Though of course it’s a balancing act, too - he wants Felix dependent, but not too dependent, not so much that he doesn’t or can’t think for himself or act on his own. Submission but not servility. That means pulling back sometimes, giving Felix a little bit of rein and at least seeming independence (though of course Malkar always has the obligation d’sang to pull him back in if need be). It means leaving Felix to his own devices sometimes, but only after he’s certain that Felix won’t do anything that Malkar wouldn’t like.

Of course it’s not all horrible, and Malkar uses kindness too, or at least praise, accompanied by the reminder that it’s not like anyone else would do this for him, Felix owes Malkar, yes, but Malkar is doing all of this for Felix so he can have a better life, do better, be better. 

It’s not like anyone else would bother with a whore from Pharoahlight. He’s just nice like that.

not weird at all!! every time someone comes at me to talk about doctrine of labyrinths/appreciates my doctrine of labyrinths stuff my heart grows approximately six sizes

I don’t play favorites or anything but it’s just very exciting when I meet people in my small book fandoms so HI AND WELCOME TO THE DOL PIT glad you’re enjoying the experience :D

honestly all these books have done is make me miserable but like......in the best way

doctrine of labyrinths is basically “you’re gonna suffer, but you’re gonna be happy about it: the series”
