Grassroots tenant organizers say Doug Ford is distracting from the housing crisis by throwing out insults and threats instead of addressing the problem. ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) was present at Queen’s Park to protest the passing of Bill 60 on Monday. Bill 60’s omnibus legislation has drawn criticism from a number of concerned parties. On-top of opening the door to privatizing water, while also restricting municipalities’ ability to construct new bike lanes, it makes changes to the Rental Tenancies Act and the Landlord Tenant Board that many are saying could increase housing instability.

Press Progress reports that buried in the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB)’s annual report is praise for the water system in the town of Mapleton in Wellington County, Ontario as an example of a good private-public partnership (P3). The CIB report says there is “potential” for similar privatization schemes across the country.

In one P3 example, in 1998, Hamilton, Ontario signed a 10-year P3 deal for their water systems. Soon after, residents woke up to 135 million litres of raw sewage spilling into the harbour, and flooded basements and businesses. Hamilton’s water service workforce was cut in half, project costs ballooned, and the water contract changed hands four times.

The Infrastructure Bank’s CEO even admits the scheme will see money flow from the pockets of ordinary citizens to big companies, telling a business magazine “users will fund the bulk of the operations and of the returns to investors through user-fees and other revenue mechanisms.”

The privatization of Canada's water is a serious issue and needs to be addressed. Water itself, not the water services, but the water itself is NOT a commodity and should not be owned by any one person or group.
