My Dress Hangs There
Frida Kahlo, 1933
This painting is full of homesickness. After three years of living in America to further her husband, Diego Rivera’s career, she was aching to return to Mexico. Frida was outspokenly not a fan of America. Aside from American candy, and the cute Chinese babies in Chinatown, Frida didn’t enjoy life in what she referred to as Gringolandia (iconic). Diego Rivera, on the other hand, insisted on staying. He was enjoying the fame and attention. He was commissioned to paint murals for Rockefeller, who was an outspoken antisemite, and an early supporter of Adolf hitler. This was also a clear contradiction to the ethics of communist party he was a part of in Mexico. Frida hated Rockefeller, and the hyper industrialism he represented. Famously, during a dinner party with Rockefeller, Frida asked Rockefeller if he was a Jew. In front of everyone. Just to get under his skin. Absolutely legendary. I would love to go back in time just to see that moment.
This painting reflects her distain for americas Industrial Revolution. The superficial glamor of the wealthy, and the suffering of the working class. Instead of a classic self portrait, only her dress appears in this painting. Only a shell of herself is in America. Her soul is still in Mexico.
