Curley Wee and Jelly Beans
I have lovely memories of her time with us. She would bring us all up around the fire to warm our hands. There were probably only around twelve children in the school at that stage. She always brought the daily paper, the Press I think it was. I can remember her calling us all up around the table and she would read the “Curley Wee” cartoon to us every day.
Miss Doherty
Miss Doherty, who came from Turlough. As there was no means of transport in those days, and the distance was too far to cycle, she actually stayed in the old school (part of which had been adapted to living quarters on the instructions of the parish priest). There was a local lady by the name of Kate McDonnell who was assigned to stay with her at night. The Reilly family who lived next door prepared her meals and a pupil was sent to collect the tray at various meal times. This all changed however, when she acquired a motor car. Miss McMunn who lived down the Ballyvary road, became her housekeeper, and traveled with her each day after school and returned each morning.
Prizon school Scoil Gleann an Dùin (Glen school on the hill)
Prison school is a small school which once existed in a place called Balla in Co. Mayo. Once part of the town of Manulla is situated in a townland called Prison East. The school was opened around the mid 1800’s and closed in 1970 where the remaining pupils were amalgamated into the Balla National School. The school itself has nothing to do with any Prisons except in name. The name Prison or often spelt Prizon is made up of 3 townlands Prison North, South and East. This site celebrates the history and remembers the former pupils of the school.
