i think fanon and headcanons and fanfics are amazing and creative and truly fun and interesting anddddd all kinds of different positive adjectives. BUT

do not come into canon space trying to prove or argue with distorted facts and opinions. know your place. this is where conflicts happen and "oh canon fans are trying to control others and they don't let people do their own thing" miss me with that because what happens is someone comes in high off of fanon cocaine in a whole different space saying stupid things and they get whacked. naturally....as they should lol.

Is it just me or are transformative works not allowed to transform things anymore?

AUs or setting shifts? Cringe, might as well just make OCs at that point. Fix-It fics? Disrespectful to the author's vision and a sign of lacking media literacy. Fluff or lighter than canon? Self-indulgent rot, go outside. Anything darker than canon? Whoa, calm down edgelord. Shipping? You'd BETTER be prepared to defend your thesis using several examples from the canon text and even then you're on thin fucking ice. It's "he would not fucking say that" but there are 5 different mutually incompatible and hotly debated views about what he Would Fucking Say or not.

There's just so much pettiness and entitlement surrounding writing and art people are sharing with you for exactly zero dollars on this site, it drives me up the wall. If you want only things that are entirely compatible with canon with exactly zero deviations canon itself is *right there*. Or better yet, if that's the only thing you want to see, write it yourself and accept works that aren't to your liking are always going to exist.

lowkey don't vibe with canon purists who rant against fanon as if their real life is on the line policing like how can you ship these fictional characters? they never interacted! they don't even like each other! they end up with other people! they are enemies! wow okaaay and?? how can i ship them? on tumblr?? with my head, heart and pussy girl THAT'S HOW watch me!

dgmw i love me some canon ships but it does not make me a gatekeep dick to those who ship my blorbos with others. i may not like every ship but i don't bother random people for that. i mostly dgaf because it's FICTION people in fandom spaces are allowed to ship whoever however they want it isn't that serious lol none of them are real and we will all die one day!!! let people be creative and have fun these are trying times

Listen, in the act of partaking in another's story you are inherently adding things from your own brain- sensory data, personal experience, your own understandings of the world- to it to make things seem more real, to be more immersed in it. Without that the author only has the signal they put out in the world in the form of words on a page, of lines of code, of colored pixels. To partake of a story is to inherently risk distorting the author's vision even in some small and insignificant way. The only way for a story to stay pure and untainted holy writ is to just...not be discussed at all. And that is how stories die.

Obligatory disclaimer that when popular fanon takes hold that protrays a member of a minority group in more stereotypical fashion than canon like poor Raihan gets hit with sometimes THAT'S a whole nother story but I have seriously seen people get fucking furious about things as harmless as "I don't want this guy to die" fix-it fics
