hey, if you're an ace attorney fan and its contradiction-finding gameplay is something you actually like rather than tolerate, please check out Intelligible Games' Pro Philosopher and its brand-new sequel. they're ace attorney-style games about debating dead philosophers. the first one is about moral philosophers from Euthyphro to Immanuel Kant, and i've gotta say, taking down kant is one of the most satisfying things i've done in a game. the sequel is about political philosophers, running the gamut from Machievelli to Marx to Rawls.
it is a really unique experience having to confront the flaws in perspectives i largely agree with, and there's one i won't spoil here that felt particularly uncomfortable. i suspect some who play it would find more flaws in their argument, or flaws in the counters you have to use, but i will say that it's rare for a game to make us think like this at all. the game does a good job painting an accurate, if abridged, depiction of each of these ideologies, and the criticisms at least never feel like moon logic. i'd say that debating philosophers is honestly the natural extension of ace attorney's debating gameplay, and pro philosopher makes a number of improvements which i've detailed here. also, while i primarily enjoyed the first one solely for its gameplay, the second has legit drama and pathos and it makes me feel things. ah, just get the game! be part of the early wave!
i've been playing Pro Philosopher 2, an ace attorney-style game about debating famous philosophers, and while i'll talk about the story more after beating it, there are some cool things the game does from the perspective of designing an AA-like that i want to talk about.
1: Small Evidence List
this isn't a pro or con necessarily, but it is a unique thing. each debate's idea slate in pro philosopher is a lot smaller than even the smallest court records in an ace attorney case. this means that everything you need to know is right in front of you, and it makes challenging a philosopher's points much more tightly designed of a challenge.
2: Restoring Health
this one's pretty straightforward. you start each encounter at half health (or "credibility" in this case) and while presenting the wrong idea still gives a penalty, you actually gain an equivalent amount from presenting the right one. this helps give the game a push-and-pull, rather than the steady decline of ace attorney that encourages savescumming.
3: Alternate Objections
you know how sometimes in ace attorney you have an idea for a contradiction but it's not the one the game wants you to do? the worst part of that situation actually isn't getting it wrong, it's the lack of communication for why it's wrong and getting penalized anyway. in pro philosopher, there are a few times when you can present a somewhat cogent argument that your opponent can easily refute. like, a few times in my current debate with frantz fanon (which, by the way, props for that), there's a few times i've made objections (or, "Nonsense!") where my contradiction only applied to a strawman version of what he was saying. and in all those cases, i've been given clear indications for why i was wrong, and i wasn't penalized for it. this is a lot easier to do in a small indie game, especially with an evidence list so small, but it is well appreciated. speaking of!
ace attorney friends i am begging you to try pro philosopher
the first one is free on steam and the sequel (starring ariadne and her new roommate jen!) just dropped a demo today!
PRO PHILOSOPHER 2: GOVERNMENTS & GRIEVANCES
not really an exciting screenshot MAN, what a genuinely intellectually stimulating game. I imagine its effects are bolstered by it being my first introduction to half of the thinkers/ideas presented, but still. It took a few chapters to hook me, and I find those first few to be cut incredibly short, but once this game allowed itself to run uninhibited, I fell in love. The soundtrack too, only increased my enjoyment.
See if you can out-shine this very shiny boy in Pro Philosopher 2! Maybe you can even give him reality check.
Play our new FREE demo on Steam! It's the whole first chapter!
