IT WAS HEARTBREAKING HOW MUCH CORRUPTION built up over the span of only five years. many people might consider that a long time, but Matthew knew better than anyone that time didn’t simply stop because you weren’t there — it kept going, excruciatingly so, and it was always less time than you’d think. he may have been gone, but he had expected better from his city. some had stepped up in his absence to ease the struggle and conflict, but even they were tired. just like now, he can hear it, the sound of someone skirmishing. a woman has a man beneath her, pinned down. a part of the devil, law abiding side that stood up for right and wrong, even when others wouldn’t, knew she had to stop. another part of him, the darker part, hiding in the caverns of his soul, wanted her to continue.
THE FIGHT WAS DONE THOUGH. the man had given up, but she didn’t relent. “You’re going to kill him!” his words are sharp, furious. he knew what it felt like to let go, to just throw punches until the world turned red. there was a certain vindication in it, he knew. but if you let yourself stoop to their level, what did that make you? slowly, Matthew raises his hands to show his attempt to pacify the situation, though his stance imparts his readiness to retaliate, should the woman decide he was next. “He’s done. You need to stop.”
