Film170B Assignment #1 Process Paper

      For this first assignment, our group decided to make a short film about two people starting from different places but ending up at the same place. In our story, the two characters were working on their own things at different places, and then they both feel like they wanted to go and use the restroom. So they left their workplace and met each other in front of the restroom together in the end. We made the film cuts between our two characters to show them working and starting to walk towards the restroom at the same time. In the end when they finally met each other in front of the restroom, the male character let the female character go first and wait anxiously outside of the restroom.

        During the shoot, we went to three different locations to shot: enginering 2, physical science building and communication building. We tried to design our characters’ walking path so that it would looked like they are coming from two opposite directions and end up meeting each other in front of the same restroom. In the scenes where they are walking, we tried to start shooting as they are already walking so that it would look more fluent when we put these shots together. As we are shooting, David and Christie were the two different characters inside the film, while me and Lizzy were mainly holding the camera and helping out to do some other stuffs that need to be done. But we also all took some turns to try out holding the camera and filmed some clips. I think we worked pretty well, but I still wish that we could have more time to shoot. Other the other hand, since it is the first time for most of us to actually use the camera and film something,  we forgot that we can set the camera to black and white mod which we all think that will looks a lot better. And also we found that for some scenes we didn’t do enough clips so that we can have more options when we were editing it. After all, I think it is a very interesting experience that we all learn a lot from it.

The basis of my investigation was the following question:

My investigation was about how different properties of polyethylene affected its transparency.

 CHOICE OF TOPIC AND EXPERIMENT

I decided that since the question was about the visibility of something underneath a material, the investigation should therefore revolve around transparency, and its relationship with different properties of polyethylene.

For the experiments supporting this theme, I used the research I conducted (and the results of the previous experiment I had carried out in the case of the second experiment) to test the transparency of different densities of polyethylene in different ways. I changed the dependant variable from the legibility of text to the amount of light sensed by a light sensor in order to more fully explore the topic and approach transparency from a different angle.

 CONDUCTION OF RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENT

Firstly, I did preliminary research to gain a basic understanding of polyethylene, its uses and most importantly its properties. I found that the main difference between different types of polyethylene (and affected its transparency) was density. This helped me design and evaluate the results of my experiments and ultimately come to my conclusion. For example, the independent variable throughout my experiments were the density of polyethylene.

I carried out two experiments to gather findings in order to find out which ‘parameter’ of polyethylene affected its transparency, using different dependant variables to attempt to find out how the density of polyethylene affected its transparency. I tested different densities of polyethylene for how visible text was underneath different heights and how much light passed through them at different heights.

Due to time constraints, I was not able to carry out a third experiment, but in my documentation of the investigation I outlined a theoretical third experiment that I would have carried out given the opportunity.

 FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS

My general findings indicated that text was more visible under lower densities of polyethylene, and more light passed through lower density polyethylene. For example, high density polyethylene made text underneath it illegible at the lowest height (2.5 cm) and the other lower densities were still transparent after 1m. Additionally, the general trend was that the light sensor in the second experiment sensed the most light through low-density polyethylene. From that, I concluded that the denser the polyethylene, the less transparent it would be.

 SIGNIFICANCE OF FINDINGS TO THEME

Since my findings indicated that the density of polyethylene is what affects how transparent it is, I then concluded that the property of polyethylene that causes the phenomenon described in the question was its density. This links to the themes of transparency, the properties of polyethylene and the relation between the two.

 REFLECTION

           Although many aspects of my investigation were successful, others were not. My method for experimentation was not always very accurate or effective, although to my credit I did go on to design further experiments that fixed the issues I identified. On the other hand, I still did not manage to gather as many accurate and easily interpretable results as I had hoped, and therefore my conclusion was not as solid as I wanted it to be.

           Additionally, my management of time was not optimal. I did design a schedule near the beginning of my investigation for what I should do and what (shown below).

Although this schedule helped me structure my investigation, I did not use all the class time I had effectively, and often wasted time being unproductive. This is part of the reason I was unable to carry out a third experiment, and if I were to re-do the investigation, this is an important factor that I would change.

           I believe that in general, my approach to the investigation was positive and curious. I was diligent in my documentation of the investigation, but at times I did not investigate further where I could have, and I would also change this.

           Finally, I believe Hyugo and I worked well together on his experiment, but seeing as I did not need a second member to help me carry out my experiment, we did not work together on mine. If I were to do the investigation again, I would make sure Hyugo was more aware of my experiments and try and find a way to incorporate him into helping with my experiments.

I loved the original poem because of its visual language. I found myself being able to see everything under the smoky circus tent, I am there when I read it. The only problem was that I didn’t really relate to the circus theme. I’ve never been to a circus or had any thought of going to one. It appeals more to horror stories for me, not mystery and magic, even when those are the desired emotions. I thought of a scene that I would enjoy writing about much more. I thought about the ocean and the desert, but those weren’t right. I couldn’t think of enough mystery there. I decided on the forest, because I am passionate about the forest. The forest is mysterious and I can’t get enough of it. The forest is my comfort place, so I feel very comfortable writing about it. I’d never run out of words.

After I decided that I would change circus to forest, I moved onto the words. I wanted to keep the visual language, but I had to change the vision to the dark forest. I liked the format so I didn’t have to worry about changing the three stanzas or the amount of lines. I took all the words that described a circus and exchanged them with words that described the jungle. It took me a little bit to come up with a title, and I don’t even know if I like the one that I have there right now. It was difficult to find one that was like the first, bt related to my poem. I really liked the words that I used to replace the circus words though. I think it turned out very well. I like how I turned the magic act into a fight between animals. It worked out really well for me.

Overall I think I managed to change the theme to the jungle while keeping visual language. I especial liked the line “a rose of jeopardy grows in the brush” that I changed from”a rose of jeopardy flames in my hair” I really liked the visual of the rose and it stood out a lot in the original poem. I thought about changing it to a trillium or some other forest flower, but then decided that rose pops out a lot more because it is rare to see a rose in the forest. It could be taken as a sign. It leaves something for the reader to be left thinking about, like what does a rose in the forest mean?  I really liked this line in the first, “Mocking as Mephistopheles,”. I had to look up Mephistopheles and I found that he is a demon.  I couldn’t find something forestry that could compare to that and so Sylvia Plath wins in that line war. I really enjoyed re-writing this poem, I thought it would be a lot harder than it would be, but once I found a poem that I really liked, it was very simple and enjoyable. I really like the second poem, almost as much as I like the first.

I really enjoyed writing all of these poems. Once I was able to let go and spill my heart out onto the page, it wasn’t so hard. I had complicated the whole poem writing process in my head. All I had to do was find something I was passionate about and spill my guts out. I had prepared myself to have a very hard time on this project and was left very relieved to find that it came to me very easy. I have found a new love for poetry and am proud of myself. I couldn’t bring myself away from writing poems through this project. I kept using this assignment as an excuse to write poetry instead of doing other homework even after I had was gone over five poems. I was really glad to have this assignment because I was really able to get some things of my chest. As I wrote more, I could find myself getting better, not only was I spilling onto the page, but it was well thought out spill. It started to gain rhythm and  I was proud to put it on my blog and call it mine. I created a tumblr blog just for this assignment and in the past few days that I have created it, have gotten 3 followers. It is really great to know that people are reading my poetry out there. I love writing and hope that I can become good enough to make a living some day. This assignment kindled my love for poetry.

I enjoyed going out onto the internet and finding poems that I liked. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I liked writing them, but it was pretty fun. I found that it was hard to find decent poetry that I liked and could relate to though. Some were so confusing that they went right over my head like “Look off, dear Love, across the sallow sands/ And mark yon meeting of the sun and see/ How long they kiss in sight of all the lands/ Ah! longer, longer, we./ NOw in the sea’s red vintage melts the sun/ As Egypt’s pearl dissolved in rosy wine/And Cleopatra night drinks all. ’Tis done/ Love, lay thine hand on mine/ Come forth, sweet stars, and comfort heaven’s heart/ O night! divorce our sun and sky apart/ Never our lips, our hands” by Sidney Lanier. It is beautiful, but I have no clue what it means. Poems that I found, understood, and related to were hard to come by, but worth it. I really enjoyed reading what other people had to get off their chests’.
