Film170B Assignment #1 Process Paper
For this first assignment, our group decided to make a short film about two people starting from different places but ending up at the same place. In our story, the two characters were working on their own things at different places, and then they both feel like they wanted to go and use the restroom. So they left their workplace and met each other in front of the restroom together in the end. We made the film cuts between our two characters to show them working and starting to walk towards the restroom at the same time. In the end when they finally met each other in front of the restroom, the male character let the female character go first and wait anxiously outside of the restroom.
During the shoot, we went to three different locations to shot: enginering 2, physical science building and communication building. We tried to design our characters’ walking path so that it would looked like they are coming from two opposite directions and end up meeting each other in front of the same restroom. In the scenes where they are walking, we tried to start shooting as they are already walking so that it would look more fluent when we put these shots together. As we are shooting, David and Christie were the two different characters inside the film, while me and Lizzy were mainly holding the camera and helping out to do some other stuffs that need to be done. But we also all took some turns to try out holding the camera and filmed some clips. I think we worked pretty well, but I still wish that we could have more time to shoot. Other the other hand, since it is the first time for most of us to actually use the camera and film something, we forgot that we can set the camera to black and white mod which we all think that will looks a lot better. And also we found that for some scenes we didn’t do enough clips so that we can have more options when we were editing it. After all, I think it is a very interesting experience that we all learn a lot from it.
