Is success all about attracting society's applause ?

People celebrate success. It is the Success which gets documented. Everyone around us are keen on knowing the result but nobody cares about the process, depth of process nor the difficulties involved. In anything and everything we focus only on the result. Ofcourse, I won't deny that success brings us immense joy but I feel success is complete only if the process has been valued by us.

'Hardwork' brings success is a famous saying. Nowadays people prefer saying 'Smart work' brings success😅. Let's come to this smart work. People have different perceptions to this word 'smart work'. If plotting a plan to achieve the target by deviating from the normal process is appreciated as smart good, well, I differ from this view. When process is deviated, irrespective of whether we achieve the target or not , I feel we do lose something.

I am just pointing our approach here, the result-oriented approach. What do we lose in the result-oriented approach? It is the beauty of process and learning which the process can teach us is what we lose. I am not against smart works, I am only against skipping the process. Its is completely fine to deviate the unwanted things and follow a process-oriented smart work😅😅. Let's not skip the process and name it as smart work. Smart work is something different.

People cut short the process just to achieve the targets, focusses only on documenting their success and attracting the society's applause. Though they claim it as success it is not so in real terms.

Not all achievers have acquainted sufficient knowledge of what they have achieved nor all knowledge seekers have achieved their goals. Rather than focussing on results let's be devoted to the process.

In a better way I can say that success is not about who has been applauded by the society louder nor who has been applauded first. Success is all about whether we have given our best and whether we are satisfied with what we have done.

We do succeed when we learn, where learning is an intangible success which society cannot recognize. Our dedication shown to towards the path of achieving something can teach us more in terms of experience.

Here’s the most important job-related trick I have.

In figuring out if your workplace is a process-oriented (everything must be done according to X) or a goals-oriented (we need all these tasks completed by Y) place, the following question is a good gauge and should be asked near the end of an in-person interview:

I know start time is 8:00 am, but I generally run about ten minutes late in the mornings no matter what I do. Is it okay for me to come in at 8:10, or do I need to be here right at 8?

If the answer is some variation of as long as your work gets done and you’re basically here eight hours: You’re working for a goal-oriented company. They want to see that you can meet deadlines in whatever way gets you there. They will likely have some internal rules of how to do things, but you’ll probably be left to find your own rhythm within those rules and can even ignore the ones that slow you down.

If the answer is some variation of well sure, but you can’t leave until 5:10 (horrible, dead-behind-the-eyes laughter): You’re working for a process-oriented business. They will have strict guidelines on how everything is done. They will expect you to be exactly on time if not a few minutes early. They will expect you to stay until the “proper” time to leave even if all your work for the day is completed. 

In general, goal-oriented companies will give you more leeway on doctor visits/mid-day errands and the like as long as you are meeting your deadlines and taking care of business. Process-oriented places aren’t going to like you leaving in the middle of the day or coming in late or leaving early because it disrupts the so-called process. 

I’m not trying to bag on process-oriented workplaces; it works very well for the right kind of person, but I am not that person at all, so it stifles me pretty hard.

The Dark Night

Yesterday I had a serious of realizations that lead to an immense depression.

I started describing the art of focusing on the present, and realized that a huge contribution to the hangups I have about my self day-to-day comes specifically from holding a future projected ideal. And this high standard results in an inability to focus on the present and fall in love with the process of self improvement and change. I’m too focused on the future, and I see the present as getting in the way.

As I described this I realized that giving up that future idealized self in order to regrip the now would, ironically, best give me the chance to have that future. I grew immensely depressed at my potential to give up that future self. So much, if not all of who I am, is put in that basket. 

Mind you, it wasn’t a wonder of whether or not I *could* do it. Oddly enough, the ability to do so seemed all too easy. The problem today became regripping the world as someone who is able to be in love with the process in the present. I vacillated between calm questioning and immense fear and sadness.

It was as though my mind was caught in between - with no clear alternative, my mind wavered shifting back and forth. 

In Buddhist circles this type of mental anguish is sometimes referred to as the Dark Night. Is this what has been happening to me?

MILESTONE: DAY 300

It is supremely ironic that on day 300 I was traveling and it passed by without me really knowing.

This is a huge, huge milestone. I don't think I've done anything with this much deliberateness ever in my life for so long.

What's great is that it's no big deal in my consciousness....It felt like another day, going through the same procedure...Which is totally what a HABIT should feel like. 

I'm not some guy huffing and puffing to cross a finish line in his mind - I'm not dieting for 3 months or sprinting for 5 minutes - this is lifetime change that I'm trying to inculcate, and I think it shows that I'm starting to do it.

What's hilarious is that though I've made immense changes in these past 300 days if I step back and look at it all from a longer lens, it's not that long at all. It's not even a full year.

That makes me terribly excited about the next year, and the one after that. In process oriented thinking it's about the long game - the one that solidly increase the odds of life. I've done so much so far, I can't wait to see what's going to happen in the future.
