Process Book Binding + Reflection

When creating this process book, I have been mainly focused on simplicity in layouts, grids, and functionality. When looking back on previous process books, the main areas of needed improvement have been in the technical errors, whether that is margin size, text size, or bleeds. Within this process book, I attempted to minimise said errors by focusing on simple yet effective compositional skills, using grids to guide me through this.

As for the content itself, I focused on getting as much as I could into this book, which was successful for the most part. However, as I using the perfect binding method to create this book, I had to sign up for a binding session early in the week. This meant I was able to complete and include all of my D&AD project, however not all of my website process. I managed to include a good portion of the development and some of the outcome, but my website is still a work of progress and not finalised, as i simply did not have the time to do so.

However, all being said, I am proud of the outcome for this book, and think it is my most successful process book created thus far. I also included links underneath the images used within my process book, to contextualise the research properly.

Test Printing Process Book

Test printing my process book so far, I managed to get a good sense of the size and layout by doing so. I think this has shown me that my margins are a good size, however i think my text size could be a tiny bit smaller. Aside from that, Im happy with the image sizes and compositions.

Process book binding

I am really upset with the outcome of my process book as the printer ruined so many things. Firstly, the colour was completely changed for my cover (as the printer was running out of ink), the images were all completely the wrong colour, and there was a divide in colour on some of my images. Alongside this, the printer shifted, and ruined my margins. 

Alongside this, I had to use a much smaller thickness for my process book cover as the 220gsm didn’t work in the printer. I feel really disheartened because this wasn’t in my control.

Process book- changing layouts + text size

Working on my process book, i decided to change the layouts for some of my spreads. For this layout, I decided to bring make the image more condensed, to showcase the small accent ‘visual communication in context 2′ + page number. 

The same goes for these kinds of layouts, where I made the image cut off before the small accent.

I then went through and changed the size of all of my text. After looking at the printed version of my process book, I chose to make the text 9 point rather than 10. This is just to make sure the book looks balanced when printed.

Process Book feedback

Printing off my most recent design of my process book, this is the feedback i received from Mark. I am really pleased with how much improvement i have made to this design, and now am able to just tweak areas here and there.

Going through the pages, I noticed some illustrations/ images didn't have the best quality. I have highlighted them to change and work on. 

Again, needing to be stricter where type is concerned, I need to go through and stick to a certain design of title. As i have several different compositions, colours, sizes and weights for different titles across my book, it would be better if i developed a rule and stuck to it. 

I think i will do so by making all of my titles this small, bold design (as shown in the picture above) , creating hierarchy by applying accents of colour with it.

Here i can see the different uses of black (as ive mixed rgb images with cymk colours), which needs to be changed. To link more with the first chapter page, I am going to re-design this so the background is the orange colour i used in this chapter, and the text is black or white.

Plan for process book refinements

By creating a contact sheet of all of my spreads, I have gone through and pin-pointed a couple of my favourite layouts. I want to create a sort of formula to follow and apply to all projects within my process book; in order to create a more consistent, coherent design. I will be looking back at these spreads for guidance on how to keep things harmonious rather than having experimental designs for all pages.
