☆     𝑘𝑜𝑡𝑜𝑘𝑜 𝑢𝑡𝑠𝑢𝑔𝑖 .      ☆

          she   eyed   the   new   boy      from   her   place   leaning   on   monaca’s   desk .      nagisa   shingetsu ,      she   was   pretty   sure .      had   only   been   moved   to   their   class   the   day   before .      but   he   was   the   li’l   ultimate   social   studies .      a   title   that   meant   he   pretty   much   had   to   be   smart ,      right ?      a   fact   that   seemed   almost   a   given ,      considering   the   way   he   held   himself .      almost   everything   about   him   screamed   teacher’s   pet .      so   the   odds   that   the   only   subject   he   was   good   at   was   social   studies   seemed   pretty   low .

          at   least ,      he   was   probably   better   then   the   rest   of   the   class      —      monaca   not   included      —      which   meant      —      maybe   this   was   her   chance   to   redeem   herself .      because   from   the   sounds   of   the   call   her   mother   received   the   night   before ,      if   her   grades   didn’t   start   improving ,      she   might   soon   face   expulsion .      &&   if   that   happened      —      it’d   mean   losing   the   only   friends   she’d   ever   have .      not   to   mention   even   more   rehearsal   &&   work   &&      —

          she   glanced   at   the   clock   above   the   blackboard .      there   was   still   time   before   class   started ,      so      —      she’d   quickly   excuse   herself   from   monaca’s   desk      —      halfway   explaining   that   she   needed   to   ask   something   about   last   night’s   homework .      not   a   lie ,      at   least ,      but   not   quite   the   declaration   that ,      if   she   were   offered   the   opportunity ,      she   would   definitely   be   willing   to   cheat .      wasn’t   as   if   monaca   was   oblivious   to   her   situation ,      anyways .

          though ,      admittedly ,      her   question   about   last   night’s   homework   was   primarily   regarding   the   fact   that   she   barely   understood   it   &&   hadn’t   had   much   of   any   time   to   do   it   the   night   before .      so   despite   the   fact   that   she   was   confident   it   was   considered   rude   to   introduce   yourself   to   someone   by   asking   them   to   do   you   a   favor ,      she   approached   his   desk ,      schoolbag   in   tow .

          not   that   it   gave   her   much   time   to   figure   out   what   to   say .      but      —      she   should   at   least   introduce   herself ,      right ?      took   a   deep   breath   as   she   offered   the   boy   a   warm   smile .      if   he   thought   she   was   cute ,      maybe   he’d   be   more   inclined   to   help ?      it   was   worth   a   try .      “      good   morning !      i’m   kotoko   utsugi      —      li’l   ultimate   drama .      &&      —      i   know   it’s   really   sudden ,      but      —      i   was   wondering   if   you   could   do   me   a   huge   favor .      ”

          smile   turned   apologetic   as   she   nearly   plead   with   him .      didn’t   want   to   seem   desperate ,      but   in   reality ,      she   pretty   much   was .      “      i’d   seriously   owe   you .      it’s   just      —      i   need   some   help   with   last   night’s   homework ,      &&   i   figured   you   seem   really   smart ,      so   i   thought   maybe   i   could   ask   you ,      is   all .      ”

          THE   SOUND   OF   SOFT   HUMMING      echoed   through   empty   streets   as   she   meandered   along   just   ahead   of   him ,      her    signature   denture   launcher   swung   carelessly   along   beside   her .      the   tune   was   a   song   from   some   old   show      —      repeated   ad   nausium ,      making   its   way   into   her   subconscious   &&   emerging   in   an   idle ,      thoughtless   noise .

          towa   city   was   changing   rapidly      —      proof   enough   in   the   retreat   of   adults   into   the   darker   corners .      places   they   hoped   they   wouldn’t   be   found .      but   of   course ,      that   was   what   really   made   this   HUNTING .

          not   that   she   cared   much   for   it .      the   search   tended   to   grow   tedious   on   its   own .      just   another   reason   she   was   glad   to   have   company .      a   thought   at   which   she   would   spin   around   to   begin   walking   backwards ,      facing   him ,      both   hands   clasped   round   her   weapon   behind   her ,      smiling   towards   her   companion .      admittedly   the   only   of   the   boys   she   really   didn’t   mind   being   paired   up   with   for   the   day .      (      oh ,      she   doesn’t   hate   jataro   &&   masaru ,      but   they’re   both   weird   &&   creepy   enough   that   being   around   either   alone   for   too   long   was   taxing .      )

          really ,     it   was   a   blessing   that   monaca   had   told   kotoko   &&   nagisa   to   go   demon   hunting   together .      not   that   much   progress   had   been   made   so   far ,      but   the   day   was   still   YOUNG ,      &&   her   need   for   revenge   was   partially   subdued   by   the   distinct   lack   of   DEMONS   to   kill .      so   it   was   easy   to   let   herself   get   sidetracked .      not   abandoning   their   mission ,      but   rather   choosing   to   talk   during   the   momentary   lull   of   the   morning .      “      's   it   just   me ,      or   are   the   BIRDS   quieter   than   they   used   to   be ?      d’you   think   the   gross   air   killed   a   lot   of   them   or   something ?      ”

charles eyler rather strongly opposed the existence of hope’s peak elementary. it seemed rather capitalistic in nature. who were the administrators to assign such labels to mere children? of course, the teenager had never been the sort of person who would be so uncouth as to actually protest against something. however, that hardly stopped him from visiting whenever they hosted events.

today was a science fair, complete with hors d’oeuvres. charles walked around, plate in hand as he chewed happily away on a bite-sized pretzel. his gaze lighted upon a young man with a charming hairstyle. he recognized him quickly as nagisa shingetsu, the sesl social studies. repulsive, how such information could be so easily found online. even moreso, how the boy was standing with such a look of consternation on his face, as if failure to win this fair’s top prize would result in death by domestic violence.

charles knew that look all too well. he had lived that look. so when he stopped in front of the other’s project, he made sure to offer what he hoped was a reassuring smile. “what an impressive project,” oozed eyler, his words sinister in how precise and mannered they were. “you must be very intelligent.”

          he   wanted   to   learn      how   to   dance ?      it   was   the   last   thing   she’d   expected   him   to   say .      granted ,      he   knew   that   she   did   know ,      &&   of   all   the   kids ,      she   was   probably   the   obvious   choice   to   ask .      but   that   didn’t   explain   why   he   wanted   to   in   the   first   place .      never   thought   he   seemed   like   the   type   who   would   want   to .

          but ,      all   that   being   said ,      once   she   managed   to   process   the   request ,      she   was   definitely   happy   to   help .      wasn’t   often   that   she   was   able   to   teach   him   something   new .      not   that   it   was   particularly   difficult .      at   least ,      she   didn’t   think   it   would   be ,      until   he   was   standing   in   front   of   her .      their   eyes   met   &&   her   heart   leapt   up   into   her   throat   in   a   way   it   never   had   before .      but   despite   the   blush   already   rising   to   her   cheeks ,      she’d   try   to   ignore   it .

          not   that   it   was   particularly   easy .      reached   out   to   take   one   of   his   hands ,      moving   it   to   her   waist ,      left   it   there   to   uncertainly   place   hers   on   his   shoulder      —      the   other   hand   taking   his   other .      &&   now      —      what   was   probably   the   hardest   part .      never   had   to   teach   anyone   before ,      &&   now   that   she   was   there ,      it   felt   as   if   she’d   forgotten   everything .      just   like   in   school   when   teachers   called   on   her   to   answer   questions   in   class .      no   matter   how   well   she   knew   the   answer ,      it   wasn’t   there .

          she’d   try   to   at   least   find   something   to   say .      tried   to   ignore   the   way   her   heart   was   beating   far   harder   than   it   should   have   been .      “      it’s   just      —      three   steps ,      really .      but   repeated   a   lot .      &&   sometimes   with   other   stuff   added   in .      ”      well ,      she   wasn’t   wrong .      but   maybe   it   wasn’t   as   helpful   as   it   should   be .      “      um      —      first ,      i   step   backwards   &&   you’re   gonna   step   forward      —      ”      stepped   back   with   her   right   foot      —      waited   for   him   to   hopefully   follow .      “      i   mean      —      or   the   opposite .      with   either   foot .      &&   normally   you’d   lead ,      but      —      ”      probably   not   yet .

i think... definitely, i’d want to change tumblr rp in how impersonal and lonely it can feel. i think back in 2014 it was called ‘elitism’, which is similar, but different to what i’m talking about. i’m more talking about how difficult it is to talk to a roleplayer you admire, and how much it can hurt when you see them replying to the same couple of people all the time. as someone who is extremely rejection-sensitive, i’ve found myself bitter about ‘elitist’ tumblr too. but i think it’s less about demanding that ‘popular’ roleplayers exert more time, energy and resources that they have and more about promoting a culture of understanding and respect within the rpc as a whole. i think it goes both ways — these tumblrs may look at another blog and dislike the way they write or format or characterize, and other tumblrs may look at other blogs as writing dispensers, just churning out replies every which way. if the tumblr rpc were designed so that it’s easier to know and understand the person behind the blog, i think it would be much easier to bypass things like if a theme looks nice or not, or if someone characterizes someone a little differently, or if they’re not part of a circle of friends you feel most comfortable with. i can’t say it would solve the problem entirely, but i do wish i knew more about the people behind the blogs i write with. it would be much easier to have fun on here that way, i think.

  “CEO OF THE...what?” The questioning tone is filled with CONFUSION rather than annoyance, really— sure, Makoto didn’t expect any of this to be easy! Optimistic about turning the situation around, of course, but he doesn’t expect the group of them to warm up to him and the Future Foundation very easily.  

                            This is a lot more creative than what he did anticipate, though. 

   “Well...aside from THAT, how about...would you at least be willing to listen? I’m not trying to force you to do anything, I just want to help! That’s all.”

          she   knelt   down      to   draw   him   into   a   tight ,      warm   hug ,      fingers   of   one   hand   lightly   stroking   his   soft ,      baby   blue   hair .      this   would   likely   be   one   of   the   last   times   she   saw   them ,      wouldn’t   it ?      soon   she   would   be   locked   in   school   with   the   rest   of   her   class   &&   the   killing   game   would   begin .      something   the   children   certainly   didn’t   need   to   know   the   details   of .      but   everything   seemed   to   be   settled   as   far   as   the   preparations   for   their   own   revolt      —      all   done   carefully   as   the   rest   of   the   world   &&   country   began   to   panic   under   the   threat   of   her   ultimate   despairs .

          it   had   all   gone   so   perfectly ,      &&   their   new   home   in   towa   hills   had   been   prepared      —      the   airship   set   up .      &&   above   all   else ,      they   all   seemed   hopeful   for   their   eventual   paradise .      “      y'know ,      i   know   you   kids   are   gonna   do   so   well ,      but   i’m   still   gonna   miss   you   so   much .      ”      it   wasn’t   exactly   a   lie ,      either      —      she’d   genuinely   taken   an   interest   in   the   kids ,      &&   the   fact   that   she   likely   wouldn’t   get   to   see   the   finale   that   would   be   their   collective   fall   into   despair   really   did   bring   with   it   an   especially   delicious   kind   of   despair .      the   thought   of   how   distraught   they   might   be   should   she   be   defeated   as   she   expects   to .      “      you   deserve   so   much   better   than   what   you’ve   had ,      &&   i’m   so   proud   of   all   of   you   for   being   brave   enough   to   fight   back .      ”      she   would   give   almost   anything   to   watch   their   dreams   shatter .      too   bad   only   her   artificial   intelligence   would   have   that   chance .
