Ethics Toolkit - Unit 4: The Connected Teacher Reflection
From the ethics toolkit, it is clear that teachers have many responsibilities that extend outside of providing students with the information that they need to become well-rounded students. The Connected Teacher focuses on how teachers connect with the outside world and how much of these connections are public and private ones. In this module, we learn about the decisions that teachers make as the online space becomes increasingly apart of the outward persona that teachers present.
In the situations provided they looked at how teachers presented themselves online, how teachers were using computers that were provided by the school, and how teachers were interacting with their students. In these examples some were clear violations of the trusts that the community puts into the people that teach their children. While other situations treaded on uncertainty of the times because the online presence of these teachers was apart of their personal lives and not apart of who they were in a schools setting.
Either way, it is clear that when it comes to online presences of teachers there are clear lines that one should not cross and ways that one should navigate online spaces as to not interfere with how the community perceives those who are making an impact in children’s lives. It is important that teachers continue to perceived in a positive light so that students are able to have safe environments to enter into and learn what they need to without worry that a teacher’s private life might become a distracting matter within the classroom.
This blog is such a great resource! Thank you for creating it! I have a question about my lawyer character: She is falsely convicted of a crime and sent to prison, so naturally her license to practice law is taken away. If it is discovered and proved that she was falsely convicted and had nothing I do with the crime and is thereafter released, is there any way she could get her license to practice law back? Thanks!!
Yes, I think if she was exonerated and hadn’t done anything wrong she would be able to practice law again.
Lawyers are governed by a licensing body just like doctors. I personally am governed by the Law Society of British Columbia, and there are similar organizations in the United States. I’m beholden to the Law Society to ensure that I act ethically and professionally, that I maintain a high standard of quality in my job, and that I basically don’t bring the practice of law and the administration of justice into disrepute (yes, that’s an actual thing).
Even if I don’t commit a crime, if I act improperly, I could be sanctioned by the Law Society, who can impose fines, suspend me temporarily from the practice of law, or disbar me. For example, I know someone personally who was extremely rude to the opposing party on one of his cases, sending demeaning and rude letters and basically terrorizing them to make them back down from their position, and he was fined by the Law Society, and his name was published along with all of the details of what he’d done. It wasn’t illegal what he did, but it was pretty shitty, and unprofessional.
We have the obligation to be fair, particularly to self-represented people on the other side, even while we “vigorously” defend our own client’s interests. For example, if I’m running a trial and I know of a major case that’s on point that is against my client’s position, and the other side doesn’t bring it up, I actually have an obligation to tell the Judge about the case! Sometimes our obligations can really seem to be competing (and are!) but that’s why they pay us the big bucks, I guess.

Eun-Sang woke up in their bed with no Hyo-Shin to cuddle. It made her frown when she reached for him and found the space empty. She groggily sat up and looked around for her phone. Right. Myung-Soo stole it. She was going to have to hunt.
No Hyo-Shin. Since she was alone, she pouted, and flopped back down. She stared at the ceiling and her eyes started stinging. Last night was wonderful but if the sunlight streaming through their blinds was any indication, she could no longer hide in the warm fortress Hyo-Shin made for her.
She needed to prepare herself emotionally for the onslaught. She needed to find out if this was going to affect her other kids. Eun-Sang swung her legs over the edge of the bed and glared at Hyo-Shin’s empty spot. She wanted a good cuddle before she had to beg for her phone.
Slippers were found and she poked her head out of the door. She completely expected to find their living room filled with sleepy actors, unkempt models, and a few rusty singers, but it was empty. Everything was clean and put back in its proper place. Hyo-Shin was in the kitchen putting away the last of the dishes.
Eun-Sang gingerly stepped out of their bedroom and snuck a peek over the couch. It was as she suspected. Young-Do exhausted himself cleaning up after the party. He was passed out on the floor with his head buried in Myung-Soo’s stomach. The photographer rested his hand lightly on Young-Do’s back and…while she had seen the shock and awe pictures that put Myung-Soo in the wake of Young-Do’s latest scandal, she hadn’t seen what President Yoo meant until this moment.
They were in love.
