The frustrating, brilliant Sherlock stays frustrating right to the end

If this is the end of Sherlock, the last we’ll see of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Holmes and Watson—and all protestations aside, this felt every inch a series finale—it makes for a lousy farewell.Sherlock has never been a perfect show. There have been consistent elements, to be sure.

this is (imho) a really terrific review of the last episode.  it's honest and direct about what didn't work, but it also picks out a lot of lovely details from the mess.  I basically agree with every word of it, though my opinions on this episode are changing from minute to minute.

(...) you'll find little of the bent jack-house associated with VonStroke or the stripped down techno that 3 Channels is known for. Instead, [Catz 'n Dogz] opt for an off-kilter, club-worthy exotica, with jungle drums and humid, sweat-drenched production that's reminiscent of the music that acts such as Chaino and His African Percussion Safari were producing in the '60s for suburban-swinger parties. Only with a bigger kick drum, of course.

Spirit at least had a new idea (for DM): politics, with the climate, the US right and tech dystopia all essayed. But it’s more like a series of angry Facebook posts than an album of music, even by Depeche Mode’s gloomy and dissatisfied standards.
