The walk to Defense Against the Dark Arts seemed especially daunting today. She had heard about the new Professor, everyone in Slytherin had. Snape had practically sat them all down and demanded their utmost respect for this new face of their Defense course, paying careful attention to hammer his point home to her and her fellow firsties.
According to some of the Ravenclaw’s First Years they shared Charms with the day before, Professor Riddle was nothing short of terrifying. They had described him as some unique blend of both awe-inspiring yet awful.
Her stomach did another twist.
It wasn’t that she was a poor performer in her classes (in fact, that exact opposite could be said about her) but for some reason she always felt less inclined towards the actual defense portion of the class. Always on the edge of her seat, waiting to learn more about the darker curses and creatures that she should be contending. Certainly, that was a disposition the Defense instructor would be less than enthusiastic about?
There were worse whispers in the Great Hall this morning as well. Something about his apparent preference for purebloods. She didn’t know if that was in her favor or not, never had the privilege of meeting her parents. The orphanage knew little of her ancestry, they hadn’t even known she had magic in her blood for Salazar’s sake!
She pulled on her emerald tie as she entered the classroom, doing her best to avoid eye contact with the tall man standing at the front of the room, but was far too intrigued to not take a peek at his face as they sat down.
He cleared his throat, a bonewhite wand clutched securely in his left hand. Delphini froze.
"Do not bother with that." A hand came down upon Delphi shoulder.
Professor Riddle had crossed the distance from the front. Meeting Delphi before she took a sit. His cool eyes stopping those who just enter the threshold.
"Leave your belonging there."
His hand having yet to remove it self from Delphi's shoulder.
"We will not be consulting the text today."
With a swipe of his wand the desks and chairs came to life. They filed themselves up and away from the center of the room. The blackboard wheel itself front and center. Invisible hands wrote in bold letters: Magic is Might.
"Magic is might. With magic there is possibility. Without it there is only stagnation. We only have to look at our non magical neighbors to see how challenging life is without it."
The strange man caught each student face. Holding their gaze for a moment before breaking it. Then it was onto the next, then the next. Never wavering from his speech. As if the class it self was a rues and it was them he was looking for.
"Yet magic in itself brings troubles of its own. When magic is performed wrong or when it is used for harm. Thus we have this class."
Professor Riddle finally dropped his gaze to Delphi. Holding her eyes as he had with the others.
"There can be no forces for progress without chaos. Chaos is neither good nor evil." He breaks his gaze from Delphi.
"What is considered evil to the Wizard is merely a meal to the Dragon."
"With draw your wands." Riddle said holding up his own, "We shall rid your fears now. I want you all comfortable with your wands as soon as possible."
