Then president Obama offers some homeless people the opportunity to meet him and talk to him.

A neuro-divergant caucasian homeless woman is offered the chance to meet him.

In a way not related to her neuro-divergance she says to his face, “Go back to Kenya, you filthy nigger.“

As a person lower on the progressive stack and with literally no power, not even a veteran, was her statement racist?

He’s literally the most powerful man in the world, doesn’t even have to worry about reelection at that point. He can do whatever he wants. Was she racist or just prejudiced?

Did you have to bite back bile to answer?

Are you lying to yourself?

You going to enjoy it when any black person loses the ability to call it racism when someone racially discriminates against them when the perpetrator is white but less powerful?

Progressive Stack

“Progressive Stack is a form of leading discussions which involves a facilitator keeping a list of names of people who wish to speak. The facilitator scans the group during discussion and if someone wishes to speak, they raise their hand and catch the facilitator's eye. The facilitator nods and makes eye contact to indicate the person is now put on the list to speak, and then the person can put their hand down so it does not distract other discussion participants. However, the facilitator does not simply write a list of names in the order that people raise their hand. Rather, if someone who has not spoken raises their hand, they go to the top of the list. If someone who is of an oppressed group or identity, or of a group or identity that is unrepresented in the conversation raises their hand, they go to the top of the list unless they have already contributed significantly to the discussion.“

Someone named @maxfenton super helpfully collected the 12/4 GA's explanation of the handsignals, step up/step back, and progressive stack. There were a couple of things missing from this night's explanation: stepping up and stepping back, and progressive stack, are ultimately about making sure there is space in the discussion for traditionally-marginalized (or just more reserved) voices to be heard. Also, don't forget the Point of Affection! You just make a big ol' heart with ya hands and direct it at someone you <3.

INTRO TO THE "PROGRESSIVE STACK"

Occupy Wall Street’s General Assembly operates under a revolutionary “progressive stack.” A normal “stack” means those who wish to speak get in line. A progressive stack encourages women and traditionally marginalized groups speak before men, especially white men. This is something that has been in place since the beginning, it is necessary, and it is important.
