“Used to look to women to fill a part of me that was vacant. Truth. The only thing that I ever used in moderation. // So I stare into this paper instead of sitting at a cubicle. // Take all the ugly shit inside and try to make it beautiful. // Use the cement from rock bottom and make it musical.”
Hate on the Mack all you want, but this man’s self-awareness and sincerity, within this song particularly, planted the seeds for my desire to pursue work in the music industry.
2009 was a significant year for me in that I graduated from UBC and decided to pursue big change in my life.
I made the decision to discover TRUTH, even if it scared me, hurt me, or offended my traditional framework and upbringing. I decided to take a daring dive off the edge of my comfort zone. This of course entailed me leaving a long-time partner, leaving the exclusively Christian bubble of my childhood, developing an independent sense of self, and pursuing a fulfilling career that would impact the lives of those our society deems underprivileged or “in need.”
I moved through different roles: working in a group home for at-risk youth in care of child and family services, working as a settlement worker for immigrants and refugees, and then working in a non-profit charity addressing poverty overseas.
During these past 6 years of hustling in different people-oriented sectors, I noticed a shift in Western culture at large. There was a growing respect for the feminine, a drive towards equality and balance in all areas: race, gender, class. There seemed to be a more global awareness and other-consciousness on the rise.
During this period of shift, I also met a man who changed my perspective. He would later leave me unexpectedly and tragically, but the knowledge he shared about the world being in crisis (circa the global Occupy movement) led me to move. I refused to sit idly by while I became aware of all the issues. It wasn’t enough to party and live it up in my 20’s. I wanted to take action towards real change and progress for humanity and for the earth.
Through self-awareness and owning our lives, owning our words and actions, we really gain everything. The old ways are dying off. Times are a changing.
