Peep Project Base [One of “THE” Super Metroid Hacks]
If you ever enjoyed playing the original Super Metroid (or any 2D Metroid, for that matter), check out the hack “Project Base.” It’s been around a while, but has seen several updates and fixes that arguably improves the base game without actually straying away from what made the original so cool. Project Base Download Here’s a Let’s Play of the hack that surfaced recently (ongoing, I believe?) that the head of the hack, begrimed, has personally endorsed for “getting it.” Find Begrimed on Twitter at @TheBegrimedOne, as well as here on Tumblr under the same name. He also has a Youtube account showcasing various SM hackery (I highly suggest watching the Broke As Hell series).
Edit I meant to specify why the GDQ tag was included. PB was offered up to be part of GDQ, but was ultimately denied (unfortunately). Seeing as Super Metroid runs/races are one of the biggest parts of the Metroid block, it was kind of disappointing. I think it would have been excellent to see various SM runners try the game out (blind, potentially) to see how quickly they can finish. Structurally, the game is very similar in flow, but many of the gameplay changes have allowed for new sequence breaks that make it overall a much faster and fluid game.
