Approaching the character of the Creature with enough nuance to know that he's not 100% bad and evil and entirely unforgivable as a person but also not 100% pure and wholesome and forgivable is apparently a skill that far too many people severely lack 😐
Saying it louder for people in the back:
>Trauma does not excuse causing harm
>Having been abused absolutely does not excuse causing harm
>Causing harm does not immediately make a person a soulless monster
>Causing harm does not immediately make a person permanently evil
>Having a legitimate reason to cause harm does not excuse the harm caused
>Having a legitimate reason for toxic mindsets/beliefs does not excuse those toxic mindsets/beliefs
>People should be allowed and encouraged to grow and change and become better people - yes, even if they have done or said unforgivable things in the past
>You are not obligated to forgive people for things they have done in the past, nor are you obligated to like any person, nor are you obligated to interact with any person
>Just because you are not obligated to forgive people, like people, or interact with people, that does not give you permission to cause them harm
>The Creature canonically repents for and regrets everything he has ever done. People are well within their right to believe he may actually have had a chance to become a better person
>People are also well within their right to say 'to hell with that apology, I still don't like him as a character and I personally can't get past all the awful things he did'
>People are not within their right to say that "all people should love and cherish this particular character" or "all people should hate and despise this particular character" because in this novel there are no truly good or evil characters (except Felix DeLacey fuck Felix DeLacey /hj /lh)
The era of British and American Frankenstein is OVER.
OVER, I TELL YOU!
The next time I see Victor Frankenstein in visual media he better be wearing lederhosen and a funky little felt hat blowing on an alphorn trying to sell me extra strength Ricola that'll raise a man from the dead
For the official record: I don't think anyone would be saying anything or generally give any level of a shit about Victor dropping out of college if pop culture hadn't decided to start calling him "Dr." A doctor he is very much not. A doctor he never has been. A doctor he likely never would be (at least in the medical sense). My guy literally has Medical Malpractice as his middle name. Victor Medical Malpractice Frankenstein. I mean it literally just comes down to giving him way more credit than is due. His entire problem was hubris and believing he was more ready/qualified for something than he actually was. Ignoring the consequences of his actions and calling him by a title he didn't actually earn is just ignoring one of the themes of the story and feeding into the toxicity of Victor's own self righteous nature. Maybe I just think things through too much and maybe most people are just saying things about him being a dropout to be assholes, but either way... Still just a fact that honestly nobody would even care about him being a dropout if he wasn't being given credit where credit isn't due.
