There are stories I’ve heard, and There are stories that I wish to hear, but This is not one of those stories. I wish I hadn’t heard what I am about to tell you... She dropped a bomb on me. Paula lived across the street; We walked to elementary school together; She told me about the atom bomb. My safe world shattered. Back at home, I hid under the comfort of my blue blanket and cried. My family sat beside me on the couch, unaware of the tumultuous thoughts clogging my brain; unaware that I was choking back tears. Under the covers, my imagination dove into a nightmarish world. I imagined faces melting from the chemical blast. I imagined myself as the sole survivor; witness to the suffering and dying of everyone I loved. My family seemed blissfully unaware of this impending, looming doom. Paula said that when the blast took place, she hoped to be at the epicentre and killed right away. This was too much for my 10 year old brain to digest. As an adult, I now understand that she did not want to suffer. Back on the couch, my sister called out to me and asked why I was hiding under the blanket. I quickly wiped my eyes and pulled down the blue cotton veil and started to laugh. I hoped that my laughter hid my tears.
