Hey everyone! After posting my latest Prompto Cosplay Worklog, in which I go through the process of making both his 2-tone plaid undershirt & his numerous patches, I received several questions through Instagram & here on tumblr on alternative means to create them & the best place for references and resources. Now I did put three alternative methods in the description of my video but I thought a post here on my cosplay tumblr would also be beneficial to those who perhaps watch the video through my post here vs. on my youtube page.
Now that i’ve rambled enough, here are some things to help you out in creating your own Prompto patches.
▶ Helpful References ◀
▸ The Official Roen merchandise - FFXV and Japanese clothing brand Roen partnered up to design the outfits for our main characters. They have an entire line of clothing which offers a great look at all the little details in game shots might not. Keep in mind there are some differences from the official wearable clothing to the in game clothing but using these shop listings will definitely help!
▸Tumblr User Hitorishin - This tumblr user did all Prompto cosplayers a big favor by creating vectors of the patches based on the official Roen merchandise. Many cosplays of Prompto that Ive seen have used her vectors and they look really nice! I would say if you plan to use her designs ask for permission first and/or give credit for the work she put in!
▸Tumblr User CreeperParade - I’ve reblogged this post before as I found it to be quite helpful. This post has in game reference shots as well as a semi-breakdown of the patches and outfit pieces.
▶ Patch Creation Methods ◀
▸Fast & Cheap Method - Iron on transfer paper! This stuff is amazing and very inexpensive. You can buy it at most stores like Walmart, Target or Joanns and even order it online if your local shops dont have it. For this method simply print you patch designs out and iron them on. Super simple!
▸Fast & Semi-Pricey Method - Purchase already made patches from etsy sellers! There are several etsy sellers (maybe even some on other sites) that offer the prompto patches embroidered. This can range from individual patches that are around $3 a piece to a full set that can be around $150 a piece.
▸Slow & Pricey Method - Having your designs commissioned in to patches. If you want to design the patches yourself to put your own unique touch to them, but dont want to print them on to iron on paper, you can always get them commissioned! There are sites out there that do custom embroidery for a range of prices so long as you provide the source images. This method may cost a bit more due to how many patches Prompto has, but if you want that extra touch of customization it may very well be worth it!
Anyway, this is my first time making a post like this so I hope you find it helpful! If you have any questions feel free to send them my way (Tumblr and Instagram DM are both okay) and I will continue to help as best I can!
And a side note, I designed all my patches myself and embroidered them on my own machine which is a Brother HE-1. This machine is great for beginners in embroidery like I am/was and wont necessarily break the bank. I will say an embroidery machine is definitely a frivolous purchase for the most part as I’ve used my machine maybe 3 times in the last year and a half lol.
EDIT 6.28.17 - Updated the post with some fresh links as a couple of them no long housed the resources mentioned.
