So, you’ve written the first draft of an essay, but now what?
Firstly: CONGRATULATIONS! Writing the first draft of an essay is honestly 2/3 of the battle, and whilst there is more to be done, you deserve a rest and a pat on the back! Well done, you!
But now, you’re going to want to edit that first draft and make it even better!! Here are some resources/links I’ve put together to help with all that c:
(I’m abt to start editing one of my own essay drafts so unfortunately I haven’t actually used any of these resources and can’t rate them but this should be a good starting guide)
Grammar Girl's Editing Checklist a relatively extensive editing checklist/guide
some alternatives for overused words
Hemmingway is an online writing checker thingy
An online spelling/grammar checker!
This is an online free paper rater ! idk if it’s any good but it says it check plagiarism, spelling and grammar + rates
A handout/document on editing and proofreading! This looks rlly extensive and helpful
another essay checklist! (unfortunately I couldn’t find the original post ;-; )
some tips on reducing your word count (for if your like me and write way too much aha)
some academic writing tips this is more writing tips then proofreading tips, but you can obvs use it to look at ur essay n go “hmmm I’ve done this thing bad”
an online essay grader
some proofreading tips
this spell checker lets you upload a lot in one go (at least 800 words) and offers suggestions + explanations on spelling, grammar and style
read it out loud to someone and ask them if there were any points they didn’t understand ; that probably means you need to add more evidence or explanation there. and just reading it aloud helps a whole heap
and here’s a tip form one of my teachers! An easy way to see if a lot of your sentences have the same structure, is to identify if a lot of your sentences start with the same word (this, that, when, it, etc. are some examples of a word you might use a lot at the start of a sentence.) If you keep on using the same word at the start of a bunch of sentences, that’s a sign that some of those sentences shoud be rewritten into a different format
and thus concludes my very first masterpost uwu i’m hoping this can help someone
