FIC ADVICE MASTERPOST

i talk about writing fanfic a lot and sometimes people ask me for advice, so i decided to gather a list of relevant links all in one place. as with all advice, feel free to take it or leave it. i definitely don't claim to be an expert; i've just had lots of practice.

WRITING SPREADSHEETS

i use color-coded spreadsheets with ticky boxes to help me keep track of my daily wordcounts, predict whether or not i will make (self-imposed) due dates, keep a running tally of my words per scene/chapter, remember sideplots and "literary elements," and keep track of which scenes need editing. here is a link to the general writing spreadsheet tag, but i have also collected a few relevant posts below.

editable writing spreadsheet template - i made a template! you can use as many or as few of these features as you like. there's a guide on how to do it without breaking any of the formulas. i'm very proud of this template, so if you use it, it would make me really, really happy if you came and told me about it <3

how to make your own spreadsheet [checklist portion] [predictive features portion] - prior to making this template, i wrote these "guides" for making your own, though they aren't as nice and tidy a process as the template (i've gotten better at making spreadsheets since then). but if you'd prefer to start from scratch or like your guides with pictures, here you go!

how i decide what to put in the spreadsheet columns - what goes into picking which "literary elements" i decide to keep track of.

scene headers i use to keep track of pov & editing - this is relevant to the spreadsheet because parts of the spreadsheet use these headers.

PLOTTING & OUTLINING

i'm big into outlining. i think it makes writing more fun and prevents lots of problems and reduces the time i need to spend editing, which is great because i hate editing. this is a list of outline posts.

the triangle method - why i don’t believe in writer’s block. this post talks about one of my favorite writing articles EVER, which helps increasing general writing speed/output/joy.

how i “pre-block” scenes - this isn't about "outlining," it is about "blocking" (almost like storyboarding) prior to writing a scene to prevent me from getting stuck. i sort of adapted this method from the article above.

the process i use to write fic, start to finish - this is mostly about outlining/stuff i do before i write that helps me see the big picture at a glance. until very recently i was raw-dogging my adhd and i've always found being able to "zoom out" very helpful.

how i decide on the plot of my stories - when i want a certain thing out of a fanfic, but don't know the plot yet, the thing i want actually determines the plot FOR me.

some sections i divide my outlines into - this varies greatly from project to project, and now that google docs has tabs it would probably be tabs i divide my outlines into, but this still gives you kind of a basic idea.

pros of outlining - a general ramble on why i like to outline before i write.

how i solve plotholes & logistics issues - it's super doable when you think of your story as lots of little moving parts and remind yourself that in this world, you are LITERALLY god.

connecting an unwritten chapter to existing ones - using the mindset of solving plotholes one can also swap things around to fix a chapter that feels like it doesn't fit.

PACING & STRUCTURE

a solid outline will often help determine structure but it is also still sort of its own thing. structure is like, whose pov is this, how we divide into chapters, etc.

making a fanfic chaptered or a oneshot - typically wordcount dictates this but there are other factors too.

how/when i deploy flashbacks - i use a lot of flashbacks, mostly to adjust pacing, but also for some other reasons.

medium, structure, & chronology - also goes over the process informing the structure somewhat.

GENERAL

this section is for everything that doesn't fit into the above categories.

general advice - a little of which is specific to supernatural.

how i pick titles - difficult but doable, and still easier than the goddamn summary.

how i choose whose pov to write from - this also includes some advice on how to tell an audience things about characters that the pov character doesn't know.

how to do exposition from a tight-lipped pov character - there are ways to give an audience information even when your pov character wouldn't fucking say that.meme

"talking heads" - if i'm not careful, my writing will come out like chatfic, and this sort of explains what i mean by that.

doing research before writing vs. after writing - it's often less annoying to research big things before you write and smaller things when it's time to edit.

NOT WRITING

these aren't technically about writing itself but ARE tangentially related enough that they belong here.

music to write anything to - i can't listen to stuff with lyrics when i write most of the time; i need stuff that i can write both action and slow scenes to, so i made a list.

changing the google doc colors - i get headaches a lot so dark/low contrast visuals are a must.

replying to AO3 comments - honestly there's no real wrong way to do this, the important thing is that you reply at all! i know it's a contentious topic but i personally almost never leave comments if it looks like the author doesn't usually reply :(

working with a co-author - i cowrite @cambionverse and these are the things we learned the hard way <3

Debunking 5 Writing Myths #1

New year, same myths. But this time, we’re tearing them down.

Firstly, Happy New Year to all. I plan on taking this part of my life very seriously this year. As a writer (or artist), you deserve the companionship. Where’s ma hug?

My first entry for the year. Hope this helps set the mood.

(M –Myth, D –Dream)

M: You must write every day or you’re not a real writer.

D: The term real is quite subjective in this case. What’s real and what’s not? Being a writer is a huge rollercoaster. One moment you’re writing 150k words in less than a week; the next, you can’t get past the blinking cursor. Other times, you prefer to be the reader. Sometimes, you just want to collab with other writers. Being a writer is very experimental. If you love writing, I believe you’re a writer, regardless of how often you write.

M: You should only write what you know.

D: May I also make it known here that one of the perks of being a writer is the unlimited freedom that comes with it. Don’t shy away from taking advantage of it. You already know what you know, try your hands at something new. Do some research, read similar works, and give it a shot. It’s part of the process. Don’t just stick to what you know. It gets boring, don’t you think?

M: You have to niche down or no one will take you seriously.

D: I often hear this in the content writing field and rarely in the creative writing field. This is mainly because of the monetary expectations in the former field. If you plan on offering a service, you need to be clear on what you offer and how you deliver it to satisfaction. I can say niching down helps with that. But in creative writing? If you write sci-fi today and grace us with rom-com tomorrow, I’d still read it comfortably. I look out for a great plot, amazing storyline, and character chemistry, among other things. So as a creative writer, worry not about niching down. No reader cares.

M: You’re not a real writer until you’re published.

D: Here we go again with the “being real.” Okay, let’s see—what makes a writer real? Nothing, in my opinion. A more fitting term would be great. There are great writers whose work will leave you breathless and can’t be compared to writers who are just starting out and getting used to the environment. It’s a matter of skill and experience, that’s all.

M: You must write in the morning to be productive.

D: Subjective! I wrote this in the morning, quite alright, but I could do it in the afternoon if I weren’t going to be busy—and at night, if I weren’t heading out. I’m one of those writers who aren’t affected by the time of day when it comes to writing. It just doesn’t apply to me. So before diagnosing yourself with this, it’s best you figure out what works best for you.
