Consultation Log - Week 4 (Monday)
– The second part of our objective implies that the purpose of discovering your identity is the pursuit of happiness. We should change the pursuit of happiness to the pursuit of identity so that we will focus on the process of identity discovery. We can keep the first part of the objective, then add, “and hence, to enjoy the process of self-discovery” for the second part.
• When you are on a journey, you find something to do, find someone to communicate with and in the process you will be able to learn more about or find yourself. Even if you do not find yourself, you are engaged in something meaningful so you do not feel lost.
• We should weigh the pros and cons of each idea. For the first idea, we need to set aside time (better if we allocate time for like a few days for example) and money. However, the first idea might not work depending on the person and place to shoot, whether there is enough differences to compare in the environment and culture. If the person does not make any new discoveries or engage with people, the idea will not work as well.
• In every activity there is the aspect of overcoming challenges. One will have a sense of accomplishment, one can see how they behave, and when they reflect on the activity, they will find certain parts of themselves, who have they benefitted, what are the rewards, etc.
• For example, you can share your cookies or paintings (results from the activity) with people, and the fact that you contributed or benefitted someone gives you a sense of accomplishment. You will think that you are useful and it will make your life more meaningful.
• When you repeat these activities, you can discover the commonalities, and take note of it in order to further learn more about yourself.
• The person must have a self-reflected learning, journaling. We must think of how we want the people to respond to the artefact, what stages are we bringing the audience through, how long is the duration of this, maybe we can give them a kit which has a design and interactive aspect (can be free form, have some things to guide them through their discovery, have games, recording observations and reflections).
• Maybe we can do a personality profile (for the audience) of who they want to be, then they will know how to respond in certain situations. They will know which personality traits identify them the most.
• Should the person doing the experiment tell people around him that he is doing it? Maybe he can have the support of a few close people to give him support. He must plan on the faces that he will take on and do self-reflection as well.
• For the puppet idea, maybe can have the same puppet with different roles. Then what can the person understand? We can try to make a matrix system that helps to come up with the persona of the person. Create an alter ego of yourself.
– We should weigh the pros and cons of each idea. Try to keep to 1m x 1m or 1.2m x1.2m for our artwork. We should also take a look at identity/personality quizzes. Research on difference between personality and identity, and personality and character.
