Prospero Lambertini Chosen Pope Benedictus XIV
On July 17, 1740, Prospero Lambertini was elected pope, taking the name Benedictus XIV and becoming one of the most respected pontiffs of the 18th century. A scholar, theologian, and canon lawyer from Bologna, Lambertini was known for his intelligence, moderation, and commitment to reform within the Catholic Church.
