Family raises funds for daughter's prosthetic arm, another child after insurance denial

After weeks of fighting their health insurance's denial of coverage, the Bateman family from Utah has not only secured a prosthetic arm for

BOUNTIFUL, Utah (KUTV) — After weeks of fighting their health insurance's denial of coverage, the Bateman family from Utah has not only secured a prosthetic arm for their 9-year-old daughter Remi, but has also helped another child receive the same life-changing device.

Remi's mother, Jami Bateman, shared that after their insurance provider Select Health deemed the prosthetic "not medically necessary," the family launched a GoFundMe campaign. The response was overwhelming, with the fundraiser quickly exceeding its goal.

"The GoFundMe got reposted. We exceeded well over the goal," Jami said. "I was contacted by the CEO of CrowdHealth. They decided to pick up the bill and paid for Remi's arm in full. It's just been amazing."

Because the CEO offered to pay for Remi's arm, the Batemans used the funds raised to pay for a boy in Maryland's prosthetic arm.

The viral story didn't just help Remi — her family's campaign also caught the attention of another family with an 8-year-old boy named Taj from Maryland, who will now receive the same "Hero Arm" prosthetic.

"I wasn't able to do this for Taj for Christmas," Taj's mother said, "but thought 'maybe next summer, we'll be able to get [the arm]'."

Jami Bateman hopes their story brings joy to both families.

Sketch of a prosthetic arm made specifically for Coronis. Though the design could fit others too. It is crafted to have the appearance of armor so it looks natural when she is in full gear. This one is adamantine, but not crafted in a way that causes weakness in sunlight because Coronis mostly resides on the surface now.

The arm is sturdy and versatile, in some regards, an upgrade to a natural flesh arm. It is custom made and features extra enchantments that benefit the user. The more enchantments, the higher the cost. You could also choose to add extra engravings for aesthetic purposes or things like oath tenets, phrases, etc etc. a drow noble may also engrave their house glyph into the prosthetic. Pretty much any limb could be crafted using the same technique. Arms, hands, fingers, legs, etc.

In Coronis’ case, this is her left arm. She is ambidextrous and can switch between arms with ease, but gravitates towards her right. So, in battle she uses her adamantine arm to normally perform sword techniques that require both arms, as well as using it to block incoming attacks. The arm is strong enough to withstand pretty much all weapon attacks (unless enchanted in a specific way) the arm doesn’t add to her armor class or anything but can serve as a form of protection with some finesse.
