G - Gasping
Summary: Carlos enters a fire when a kid is in danger. He enters without any equipment. He says he's ok, he can go home and he thinks he will sleep until TK comes back from his shit. Things doesnt' happen as he wish
It was rare for Carlos not to see TK or the rest of the 126 team on a call. But that day he had been assigned to a different part of town. Still, seeing members of another barracks go into the fire or seeing another ambulance taking care of people in the building block injured by the fire or who had swallowed too much smoke was strange to him.
"Relaxed day for you, eh Reyes?"
He turned to Mitchell who patted him on the back.
"Why do you say that?"
"Because TK nor anyone else in your firefighting family is here. Nothing can happen to them." Carlos looked at her blankly. "You should see yourself when they're the ones getting into fires, you stop breathing and if on top of that it's TK who has to get into a fire.
Carlos laughed. He could imagine that face when he saw TK enter a dangerous place. His heart would race, sometimes he would stop breathing, it was true, and he would get hysterical until he saw him come out.
Mitchell was right, he had a hard time worrying about his family.
He didn't have time to answer because an announcement came over the radio. "Attention all units. We have a minor trapped in the basement."
"We have no free units."
"We need more units." Said another voice over the radio.
"129 en route."
"Five minutes."
"Five minutes with a kid in there is too much." Carlos said quietly. He turned around and looked around for someone who could help but there were more cops, civilians and injured than firefighters and paramedics and everyone was busy. "Mitchell, I'm going in."
"What do you mean you're going in? You can't go in, you don't have the equipment and that place is full of smoke."
"Precisely because it's full of smoke I can't leave a child in there."
Mitchell knew she could do nothing against that look on Carlos' face. They had known each other too long already.
"Okay, you go in, but I want you at all times with the radio on and every five minutes you tell me how you're doing."
Getting in, getting to the basement and finding the boy was easy enough, at least considering he was all covered in smoke and could barely see anything. He tried to cover his mouth and nose as he had been taught, as many times TK and the rest of the 126th had told him. He walked as low as he could, he knew that smoke weighs more than air.
The boy, a kid who couldn't have been more than eight years old, was huddled between the washing machines in the building. He didn't want to come out at first, terrified that everything was filling up with smoke too fast.
But somehow Carlos managed to gain his trust, get him to accept his hand and follow him out of the building.
Carlos coughed as he reached outside, suddenly the clean air outside bothered his throat and lungs. But it felt good to see the paramedics take the boy away and bring him to safety. He was sure that in no time, the little boy was with his parents and that alone was worth it.
"Kings! Carlos!" Mitchell swept her hand in front of Carlos' face to get his attention. "Are you alright? You need to let them take a look at you?"
"I'm fine, I've only been in there a few minutes, I haven't breathed enough smoke."
"Carlos..."
"I'm serious. I'm fine and I live with a paramedic, if anything happens I'm going straight to the ER."
Mitchell murdered him with a glare, but again she knew there wasn't much more she could do to hold him back. She knew that if TK was there, if Captain Strand or any of his buddies were there, they would manage to hold him off or even make him go straight to the hospital.
But she got nowhere.
"You tell TK as soon as you see him."
"Okay, okay. Relax, it's all under control, I've only been in there five minutes and barely breathed any smoke."

March Day 18
We're getting to the end of the month but I still have some gifts to publish. This is one is is for @openbookish. Hope you like it
Title: My heart follows you
Summary: It wasn't the best moment to have a heart attack and Carlos even didn't know if it was a real heart attack. But it felt like it, it hurt like it. So he called TK for help.
Carlos wondered when criminals had become Olympic athletes who ran so fast. The guy in front of him had already turned five corners and was now running a few meters ahead of him showing no signs of being tired. He, on the other hand, was exhausted and starting to get short of breath, but he wasn't going to let it go.
Now it was all about pride and proving that he had what it took to become a detective. The exam was getting dangerously close and he had to prove that he was better than the other fellows who were applying for the position.
In his precinct there was only one open position for detective, in the city there were two other open positions. O'Brien had always told him that there was the possibility of applying for a position in another larger city.
But Carlos did not want to move. Going to another city meant sitting down with TK and deciding if they wanted to move together. But he didn't want to force TK to leave his firehouse because he wanted to be a detective. He knew how hard it had taken him boyfriend to find his place and he knew that 126th, the squad and the ambulance along with Tommy and Nancy, were his home. He would never make him decide between him and his job.
He could leave on his own, too, until an opening came up in Austin. They would still be together, seeing each other on their days off. Although if it was hard enough to juggle their schedules and shifts now that they worked in the same city, he didn't want to imagine how complicated it would be to work and live a good part of the week in different places.
Besides, they had just bought a house together and Carlos wanted to spend the rest of his life and the rest of his days with TK.
He hadn't told his boyfriend, but Carlos Reyes was on edge, desperate to get the detective position at his police station, no matter what it took.
So he didn't stop running, he wasn't going to stop until he stopped that guy and took him to the police station. He ran when he felt his chest start to burn and he ran when he knew he had to stop.
His legs shook and suddenly he was about to fall to the ground, but he managed to stay on his feet and tried to keep running, even though it was a bad idea because he could still see the guy in front of him, tired like him. He could still catch him.
And suddenly his heart started beating so hard that it seemed about to burst out of his chest, it was hurting him, it had left him breathless and for the first time he discovered what it was like to suffer palpitations.
He staggered on his feet and had to lean against the nearest wall to keep from falling to the floor.
He put his hand to his chest, he had never had heart problems, maybe that's why he was so scared when he thought that this heartbeat was not normal. He noticed that his legs were shaking, possibly from the tiredness of the run he was not used to, or maybe from something worse.
Something like a blow to the heart made him sit down on the floor. He picked up the phone and called TK. He didn't want to call 911 because he knew it would lead to an investigation. It was the last thing he needed to get the detective job.
"Hey, babe. How was your day?"
"Could be going better. Listen, Ty, are you free?"
"I'm at the firehouse with the ambulance, why?" Carlos groaned, not wanting to scare his boyfriend over the phone, but by now TK knew him well enough to recognize that there was something wrong with his voice. "Carlos, babe, what's wrong?"
"I think I'm having a heart attack."

Chapter 12
Day 23 - I wouldn't change a thing
"Don't you ever regret it?"
Carlos dropped the book he was reading onto his lap and turned to TK.
The paramedic had just gotten out of the shower, he was dressed, only in his jeans and his hair was still wet. He was walking towards him looking at him as if he was hypnotized and as if he had too much on his mind.
"You're going to catch a cold, finish getting dressed." Carlos replied, he put the book aside and jumped over the back of the couch to get to TK. "And you need to dry your hair better, need I remind you what the doctor said at your last checkup. You still have too low a body temperature, a blast of air or some cold water can end in pneumonia."
"Don't be exaggerated. It's not that cold."
Carlos picked up his cell phone and showed his the temperature. "It's eight degrees outside."
"But we have the heater on." TK ran his hand through his hair and shook it out. "Besides, I've only got it damp, it'll dry in no time.
Carlos murdered him with his eyes, put both hands on his waist and pushed him back in the bathroom. TK odaiba to dry his hair, because he said, using the same tone as his father, that the heat from the dryer burned his hair and also made him start sweating.
So Carlos took a towel and made him sit on the edge of the bathtub. He rubbed his hair with the towel and then made him lift his face to look him in the eyes.
"You've already given me the scare of my life because of the cold, once. I almost lost you for not saying you were freezing to death. I have no intention of going through the same thing again, not because of some stupid cold you can catch at home by not drying yourself properly."
It had been almost a year since the accident on the ice. They had gotten back together almost immediately, though they both knew they had a lot to talk about. As TK was recovering, they had plenty of time to talk about their feelings and what had led to their breakup. For once, lying in a hospital bed and given that it took several days for his legs to become functional again and allow him to stand up, Carlos and he had time to be honest.
Carlos wasn't going to let him get away, not after seeing TK's death so close. But he needed some assurance that his boyfriend wouldn't bolt at the next obstacle in front of them.

Chapter 08
Day 19 - Blending traditions
TK wanted to make things right, taking advantage of the fact that they were going to spend Christmas alone at home, Carlos, the children and himself, and that Carlos was feeling down about the idea of being away from his parents after having been preparing for those holidays when the children were going to enter into the family traditions.
He got to work, even if it was a last minute thing as soon as he convinced Carlos to stay home.
It was time to create their own traditions. It had been easy the year before to spend Christmas at the ranch, after all they were both exhausted between work and parenting, plus preparing for the wedding.
Maybe it hadn't been a good idea to have it in the middle of Christmas, but that had put Christmas celebrations on the back burner.
Now the children were beginning to be aware of what was going on around them, TK wanted to give them and Carlos the true spirit of Christmas, to put a smile on Carlos' lips and discover something new for the children.
But when he wanted to realize it, he found himself full of doubts. He needed to put together all the traditions he had around him and the ones he missed. Since his mother's death he had put aside everything that had to do with his Hebrew roots.
It made him three to think that the person who had been most determined to show him that part of his origin was no longer around and no one around him knew more about it than his mother. It felt wrong to try to introduce Hanukka and other customs to his children now when he had escaped them for so long.
On the other hand there were the more traditional customs of the Catholic and Latin world that came from Carlos and his family. He wanted to organize everything himself and therefore did not want to leave any detail out because then there were the traditions he had added with his father and those of Austin.
Without realizing it, he let the stress of not being able to give his children a Strand-Reyes family Christmas get the better of him.

Chapter 06
Day 17 - Winter Wedding
TK looked out the window, it was raining outside, even though the weatherman had said it would snow. The predictions were sometimes wrong, but TK hoped with all his soul, that this was not the case and that actually the fine rain outside would turn to snow.
It bothered him to get married on a rainy day, because it had made them change the ceremony from his in-laws' huge garden to the barn. The had left it beautifully and perfectly decorated; especially considering how little time they had had between friends and family.
Suddenly he needed the snow, he needed to see the white garden, he needed to go out there and feel the cold on his face as Carlos kissed his right after they were married.
It was the bad thing about being a fan of Hallmark movies. He wanted that kind of fairy tale for their wedding day. It had taken them so long to get to that moment that it still felt like he was going to wake up and the dream was going to let reality pass hm by. He was so afraid that he would wake up and Luna and Daniel would be gone, that Carlos would never want him back, or that he would never know him at all.
Carlos's hands around his shoulders made him shiver, but feeling his scent next to his and his lips kissing his neck made him smile.
"You shouldn't be here and see me before the wedding, it's bad luck."
"I think we've used up all the bad luck over the years before the children came into the world."
TK turned and hugged Carlos, putting both arms around his neck. "You're right about that, until I met you I never really felt lucky and as many things have happened to us, we finally got here and we have the twins."
"We have the twins." Carlos cocked his head like a dog. "Where are the twins?"
"Their official babysitters today are Juddy Grace, with the help of Tommy and the twins. The girls are happy to take care of their cousins."
Carlos stared at him and stroked his cheeks "I love you so much Tyler. I swear I was scared this day would never come and I wouldn't be able to say you really are my husband."
"I'm going to be your husband."
Owen knocked on the door. "Guys, the wedding is out there and there are a lot of people waiting for you, are you..."
He stared at his son. When TK had told him he was going to propose to Alex, he knew it was a bad idea from the start. Alex had never really liked him and had him as a good match for his son. It hurt him that he had broken hos heart and that TK had felt bad enough to try to take his own life.
Since then he had wondered if TK would ever really be happy and now he almost found it hard to believe that image. They were his boys, his son and the love of his life, who had also given him wonderful grandchildren.
"Dad are you okay?"

Day 12 - Enjoying Hot Chocolate together
"Are you sure?" Owen said from the other end of the phone.
"Relax, Dad, it'll be fine."
"When I saw Carlos yesterday, I don't know, I got a little scared."
"I know, me too, but the doctor said not to worry, he's got some pretty nasty case of bronchitis, but it's not getting any worse. The medications are doing their job. They've changed his medication, he doesn't have that whistling sound in his lungs anymore, but it will take a while for the fever, cough, and muscle pain to go away."
"So it's just a matter of patience and staying on the medication?"
"Yes. It's awful to have this happen precisely at Christmas, but at least, between everything among all the things that are making him feel bad, work isn't one of them. What hurts him the most is Luna and Dani missing Christmas with family, with all the Reyes family, and with you and 126th."
"They're only two and a half years old, they're the ones who are going to know the least about anything."
"That's the same thing I told him. But you know how Carlos is dad, Dad. He puts everything on his back, everything is all his fault and this...he thinks it's his fault too like he broke Christmas or something."
Owen burst out laughing on the other end of the phone. He knew Carlos well by now. It hadn't taken him long at all to become a second son to him, someone he was very fond of.
He felt bad that he couldn't do more for them now. Carlos had been severely ill for a week, between bed and couch, and the boys' house had become like a quarantined war camp, where no one could enter.
After the two years of covid, both TK and Carlos had become very cautious, they had both been through it, but then they had been lucky that it had been a mild thing. Then of course, it had been easier to catch colds and since passing the virus, Carlos always caught the flu every winter, sometimes twice, but he had never spent a few days as bad as now.
That's why, as much as they accepted the visit of their family to bring them food, give them a hand with the twins to go to the park with them, or simply for the little ones to be away from home so TK could stay at home Carlos; he didn't let anyone stay longer than necessary, to avoid ending up infecting the whole family and making them sick.
"Give him lots of encouragement and yes, it is true that Christmas will not be the same without you and especially without the two puppies. But if you need anything, you know where we all are, and don't let him trick you into getting up and doing anything."
"Take it easy, Dad. He's still married to a paramedic and I do nothing but monitor his fever and oxygen with four alarms for meds. I couldn't go anywhere if I wanted to."
