Eventually, the star's energetic output dissipates the disk through photoevaporation, the material gets taken up in planets, and the planet-forming process ceases. All young stars are expected to have protoplanetary disks, and these dusty environments make it difficult to see young planets forming. Astronomers recently observed a binary star with separate disks. The primary star has cleared out its dusty protoplanetary disk, while its companion hasn't. Now that the primary star has cleared away the obscuring dust, it's an excellent target for direct imaging of planets.

An article published in "The Astrophysical Journal" reports the results of the study of a group of protoplanetary disks with an age of up to 30 million years, even 10 times older than current models of planet formation predict. A team led by Guido De Marchi of ESA's European Space Research and Technology Centre used observations conducted with the James Webb space telescope of the cluster NGC 346, in the Small Magellanic Cloud. That region is characterized by a limited amount of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, just like the early universe. This study confirms that in those conditions, protoplanetary disks can last much longer than astronomers thought.

Roughly 1,000 light-years from Earth, there is a cosmic structure known as IRAS 23077+6707 (IRAS 23077) that resembles a giant butterfly. Ciprian T. Berghea, an astronomer with the US Naval Observatory, originally observed the structure in 2016 using the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS). To the surprise of many, the structure has remained unchanged for years, leading some to question what IRAS 2307 could be. Recently, two international teams of astronomers made follow-up observations using the Submillimeter Array at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) in Hawaii to better understand IRAS 2307.

The type of evolution observed confirms the division into stages proposed in 2020 in an article published in the journal "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society" and offers some confirmation of the mechanisms by which giant planets influence the dynamics within those disks.
