When the woman of Proverbs reaches forth her hands to the needy, I don’t think it means she’s putting a check in the mail. It sounds like she’s meeting them where they live and doing something to make their life easier…
SHE STRETCHETH OUT HER HAND TO THE POOR; YEA, SHE REACHETH FORTH HER HANDS TO THE NEEDY --Proverbs 31:20
Thank You for all of my material blessings. When I drive through poor areas and see unfortunate people on the street, I can’t help but wonder why I have so much and they have so little. My heart aches when I see their need, and yet what do I do? Oh, I may say a prayer of thanks to You--that I don’t have to live as they do, but I can’t say I have stretched out my hand to them, as if to offer assistance.
The definition of the word “stretch” in reference to Proverbs 31:20, suggests some kind of physical contact. I must also admit that when I have given to a hunger fund or something like that, it hasn’t been an act that required sacrifice, generosity, or personal involvement.
When the woman of Proverbs reaches forth her hands to the needy, I don’t think it means she’s putting a check in the mail. It sounds like she’s meeting them where they live and doing something to make their life easier.
I confess this is not a description of me, Lord. If this is one of the requirements of a virtuous woman, then I need to change.
Show me how, God. What can I do, volunteer at the Salvation Army? What if I had a sale and raised some money I could give to a family in need. I could make some clothes or share some of mine with someone who has less, or offer help or even a listening ear to someone who is truly poor.
Again, I have arguments in my mind. What if I offend them? What if they are angry or proud and refuse my help? What if they take advantage of me?
Help me remember that You didn’t argue when it was time for You to lay down on the cross and stretch forth Your hand as I pounded nails through them. No, You loved me even as I crucified You. Help me live Your love.
