Guys, I'm going to my first Pride today and I'm so excited but also kind of nervous, ya feel?
Who wants to go to Provo Pride with me this weekend?
PROVO PRIDE THEME 2015: This Is Family
PROVO FOLLOWERS!!!!
I KNOW I HAVE PROVO FOLLOWERS!
I haven't been posting a lot about this this year because I haven't been posting a lot, but we are in PRIDE SEASON!
We already had our youth Drag Pageant, this Sunday we crowned this year's Righteous Miss Provo (and I'm gonna take a quick aside to remind y'all how much the Divine Sister Misters rock. And just fyi, they recently kicked out their head queen because she discriminated and NOOOW they have bio-queens and drag kings and they're a team that all co-leads and yay we love them).
THIS WEEK STILL HAS SO MUCH PRIDE STUFF THOUGH!
Thursday: Interfaith Service. It's religious and non-denominational, preaching about LOVE and TOLERANCE and COMMUNITY: the three things our Pride really, truly stands for! We have great speakers lined up and it's freeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Friday: Kick-Off Party at City Limits which is BECOMING PROVO'S FIRST GAY BAR! Like yo, even if you don't care that much about the party, COME SUPPORT CITY LIMITS! And if you DO want to come to party, there will be soooooo much free stuff. City Limits is bending over backwards (or forwards if that's how you like it) to make an amazing party for our community. There will be drinks, music, drag queens...it's 21+ and there's a small cover. ($5 I think) FREE STUFF!
SATURDAY IS PROVO PRIDE!!!! MEMORIAL PARK! BRING YOUR BIKE OR SOMETHING! We will have bounce houses, music and entertainment all day, dancing, booths, food, more food, and soooo much fun!
And Saturday night: Provo Pride After Party. This party was WIIIIILD AND GAY last year, with drag and hilarity and sooo much fun. And booze, if you're into that. There will be prizes I believe, and it'll just be amazing.
So clear your weekend, gather your friends, get your gayest outfits and your cash ready to have an amazing Pride weekend. Because this community is AMAZING.
Come join the Provo Pride community on the FunBus Fundraiser, November 2nd, to Wendover!! This all-day community event is only $25. For that price, you get
a free dinner buffet
a free drink from the bar
a free Starbucks beverage
$5 in cash
10% off anything at the gift shop
and $1 to bet on a game in Wendover.
On top of all this, of course, you get a trip with the best Pride family you could ask for. 21+
We look forward to seeing you. Let's take our Provo Pride for a ride outside of Provo and raise some money for 2014!! The first 54 people to sign up (by RSVPíng as "YES" here on facebook and paying your $25 via paypal) are guaranteed a spot on the bus. Meet at the Frontrunner station at 3. (Be on time!) The FunBus DEPARTS at 3 pm, November 2nd, from the Provo FrontRunner Station. Leaving Wendover at midnight to be home by 2:30 am. Pay for your seat here.
A story from Steven J, visitor to Provo Pride
I just wanted to personally thank you for the effort you put into organizing this. To let you know how much this event has meant to me, let me start by giving you a little background of myself. I recently moved from West Virginia to Provo, my hometown. I was thrilled at the opportunity I had to be in my stomping grounds again, and be closer to family (my brother is attending BYU, my parents and the rest of my siblings are in Idaho Falls, ID). I, however, was not so thrilled at the social aspect. I'm gay, but not openly so. I am honest if presented with the direct question, however I try to keep it separate from the Mormon religion my family practices. Do not misunderstand, I have the highest respect for the Mormon church. I am very grateful to how my family has benefited. Unfortunately, I anticipated a distinct alienation between family and myself again. Even socializing outside of the family, I expected a non-existent LGBT community in Provo, pressured so by a religious college and Conservative tradition established firmly in that area. I was therefore surprised by a link I found on Reddit, 3 weeks prior to my arrival in Provo, and 4 weeks prior to the actual Pride event (link for context: http://www.provobuzz.com/provo-getting-its-first-lgbtq-pride-festival/). To say the least, I was thrilled. Stunned at first, but a feeling of warmth and support filled me up. I had never attended a Pride event before, so I couldn't resist an event located 4 blocks from where I was moving to. Once I arrived in town, it took all of my strength to invite my deeply religious older brother and his wife to accompany me and my nerves to the event. To my surprise, they both accepted, though not as warmly as I had hoped. Pride was close to what I imagined it to be, however I didn't anticipate so much support! Events, groups, hugs, badges, even Channel 4 Utah decided to interview me! My brother's wife fit right in, and grabbed every pamphlet offered. My brother, however was quiet, right until we decided to go. As we were leaving, BYU had asked my brother for an interview, to which he immediately obliged. Seeing him pour his heart out, and express his perspective to the college he is currently attending was beyond what I had hoped for. After attending the event, my brother has become less repulsive over my orientation, and more inquisitive. We have increasingly become closer as a result, and I can directly thank you for helping him stretch his mental boundaries. In closing, I can't share the feeling of elation I have experienced since Saturday, or the sense of support I now feel. However, I can simply thank you; You have made my hometown one I can be proud of.
Provo Pride is making history this weekend with the first annual Provo Pride Festival. No, that’s not a typo; it’s in Provo. The free, family-friendly festival will take place all day on Sept. 21, at Memorial Park (800 E. Center St., Provo).
