Today’s Funniest Case: Proximate Cause

disclaimer: yes, I do feel a little bad about finding this funny, then again I’ve been reading for hours

Ok, so two guys go for a train. One jumps on. The other has a package. Train is starting to move. Two guards help him onto the train. However, their physical administrations result in the package falling. Unbeknownst to them, this package contains fireworks, which promptly explode. The force of this explosion causes heavy scales to topple over and injury the Plaintiff, several feet away. Are the guards liable for the injury? 

Answer: Some say no, some say maybe. The first determine that the consequence is so unforeseeable the guards cannot be liable. The second says it depends on whether the act is wrongful, and if the act was wrong, then reasonable harm that results from the act is considered proximate cause.
