He was closing the place up for the night, no more than five minutes away from being able to lock the door and head to his apartment upstairs. He had just finished wiping down the last table when the the bell above the door rang, signalling a new arrival. “Sorry, but we’re closing up. I could get you a cup of coffee or a soda or something, but the kitchen’s all-” the words died on his lips as soon as Teddy turned around and actually saw who he was speaking to. For a second, he thought he was seeing things because there was no possible way he could have been looking at a woman he hadn’t seen in almost twenty years. But of course it was her. He would have recognized her anywhere. “- closed.” The final word of his sentence seemed to force itself out on reflex, but it seemed that was where it ended, because he couldn’t think of a damn thing to say after that.
