Finishing Przestrzeń

Although I was very happy with my work on Przestrzeń there were a couple of issues within the crew after I had completed my final mix. Unfortunately the lines of communication have been a little crossed between productions due to a couple of interpersonal fallouts on the course. Despite being involved indirectly in these conflicts at the end of my mixing of Przestrzeń I became involved in some ongoing conflict with Nora. 

I was informed that some tweaks had been made after the completion of the final mix which compromised my integrity as a mixer and hurt me quite personally. Although this has been resolved now I feel that it was unprofessional of the designer to change my mix. Especially if it was just to realign elements to how they were before I began mixing, such as bringing up the volume of cars I had mixed lower as they had originally been designed and placed in a particular way.

Przestrzeń - Mixing

Due to work on Olly’s documentary running very slowly and me being slightly out of the loop for what was happening with the development of the film I decided that I had time to work on another project in some capacity. 

As Nora has taken on 3 grad films, to help her work to deadline it was Zoe’s suggestion that I take over the mix on the documentary Przestrzeń. I was happy to do this as I haven’t had experience mixing a film which I have not also designed so it was good practice in what you should and shouldn’t do. 

As Nora was very busy she passed on the project to me without saying much about it. Unfortunately as she had not expected to pass the project on to someone else it had been arranged in a really unfriendly way for a mixer to receive. Rather than each track having a coherent naming or structuring system almost the entirety of the design was split between roughly 7 tracks named Atmos 1-7. These Atmos tracks contained a wealth of different sounds such as wind on the same track as video game audio and wind chimes making it difficult to mix and work with. 

My first day of work with the session began with me creating a “Save As”, splitting everything onto separate named tracks such as Rain 1-3, Polish Voices 1-4 and Wind Chimes 1-3. After this I changed the structure of some of the busses in the session making an Outdoor Sounds and Indoor Sounds bus as well as one for the Interview Dialogue. 

After this reorganising Bogu came in regularly over the days I had in the Dub Suite to give her approval on the pans, mixing and levels of everything. Once me and Bogu were happy with the final mix I passed the project to Nora once more to listen for approval and bounce so that it was ready for the final assembly.
