An Immovable Rock
David was constantly faced with danger and running for his life from King Saul, an inconsistent leader and a power-hungry tyrant.
But despite all the hardships David faced, Scripture tells us that David immediately praised God when he was rescued from his enemies—and his praise was recorded in Psalm 18.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 18:2 NIV
In this verse, David uses warrior language to create a powerful description of God’s timeless character.
The Lord is:
My rock. A solid foundation.
My fortress. An immovable tower.
My deliverer. A savior and rescuer.
My shield. A protective covering from surrounding threats.
The horn of my salvation. A symbol of strength and victory.
My stronghold. A secure place of refuge.
To David, God wasn’t just a rock or a shield, He was his rock and his shield. It was deeply personal—just as it can be for you.
That doesn’t mean David never had moments where he struggled to remember the truth … there were times when he thought God had forgotten him (Psalm 13:1) or abandoned him (Psalm 22:1). But in Psalm 18, as well as in so many other Psalms, he recognized the source of his rescue and couldn’t wait to worship.
When was the last time you considered God’s provision in your life?
Maybe it’s things like sunshine, water, and air. Maybe it’s the community of people around you. Maybe it’s an answered prayer, or even an unanswered one. Maybe it’s physical protection. Maybe it’s a unique opportunity to shine His light into an increasingly dark world. Or maybe your circumstances feel incredibly bleak, but no one can take your salvation, your joy, or His unwavering presence.
God is here for you right now, just as He was for David back then. So think back on how you have seen God provide for you throughout your life. Then, ask yourself:
What will I intentionally thank Him for today?
What do I still need to trust Him with?
