PS38
A Penitent Sufferer’s Plea for Healing
A Psalm of David, for the memorial offering.
1 <> LORD, don't rebuke me in your wrath, neither chasten me in your hot displeasure. 2 For your arrows have pierced me, Your hand presses hard on me. 3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation, neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. 4 For my iniquities have gone over my head. As a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. 5 My wounds are loathsome and corrupt, Because of my foolishness. 6 I am pained and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long. 7 For my loins are filled with burning. There is no soundness in my flesh. 8 I am faint and severely bruised. I have groaned by reason of the anguish of my heart. 9 Lord, all my desire is before you. My groaning is not hidden from you. 10 My heart throbs. My strength fails me. As for the light of my eyes, it also is gone from me. 11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my plague. My kinsmen stand afar off. 12 They also who seek after my life lay snares. Those who seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and meditate deceits all day long. 13 But I, as a deaf man, don't hear. I am as a mute man who doesn't open his mouth. 14 Yes, I am as a man who doesn't hear, in whose mouth are no reproofs. 15 For in you, LORD, do, I hope. You will answer, Lord my God. 16 For I said, "Don't let them gloat over me, Or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips." 17 For I am ready to fall. My pain is continually before me. 18 For I will declare my iniquity. I will be sorry for my sin. 19 But my enemies are vigorous and many. Those who hate me without reason are numerous. 20 They who also render evil for good are adversaries to me, Because I follow what is good. 21 Don't forsake me, LORD. My God, don't be far from me. 22 Hurry to help me, Lord, my salvation. — Psalm 38 | Hebrew Names Version (HNV) The Hebrew Names Version Bible is in the public domain. O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you.
-Psalm 38:9
You know, it’s comforting to know God knows us in entirety. The infinite nature of God means he is not limited by time or space, He exists outside of time itself and knows.
What we do with the knowledge of God’s infinity is up to us.
The easy thing is to assume a God large and beyond our capacity to grasp couldn’t care about us.
Or, taking a leap into faith here, choosing to at least try to have that personal relationship with God that evangelicals are all keen on.
How we pray should reflect us. Words are a common aspect but not always required. Writing, music, the arts, and yelling into a pillow are all valid.
We do not have to ascend a mountain or learn a special language to pray in, God meets us where we are. Taking a leap into faith just requires taking a single step in that direction and, from my personal experience, we do not finish putting that foot down before we are met by God.
Rarely is it the supernatural experience we all become so readily addicted to. Most often it lacks fireworks or special effects but has sincerity to make up for the vain miracles or humanity desires to see.
God cares.
Our emotions and emotional distress have meaning to Him. If we share there is a chance we might have a spiritual reciprocation. Something that could never happen by keeping our hearts closed off.
It is a strange and wonderful God who cares about out emotional well being and needs.
Psalm 38
A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance.
1 O LORD, rebuke me not in Thy wrath: neither chasten me in Thy hot displeasure.
2 For Thine arrows stick fast in me, and Thy hand presseth me sore.
3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of Thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.
4 For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
5 My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.
6 I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.
7 For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.
8 I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.
9 Lord, all my desire is before Thee; and my groaning is not hid from Thee.
10 My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone form me.
11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.
12 They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.
13 But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.
14 Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.
15 For in Thee, O LORD, do I hope: Thou wilt hear, O Lord my God.
16 For I said, “Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.
17 For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.
18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.”
19 But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.
20 They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is.
21 Forsake me not, O LORD: O my God, be not far from me.
22 Make haste to help me, O Lord my Salvation.
hurry, Physician, fill my ears
i confess i am afraid to pull out these arrows to spend these last moments in a hospital my indignities displayed in my pale corporeality /\ festered wounds have already been made public and the fool is only evoked when sin overwhelms guilt and needs to bray at memory tumultuous longing undoes me and the voices of the aloof sound and resound echo and stab and i cannot conjure deafness
A Penitent Sufferer’s Plea for Healing
A Psalm of David, for the memorial offering.
1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. 2 For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me.
3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. 4 For my iniquities have gone over my head; they weigh like a burden too heavy for me.
5 My wounds grow foul and fester because of my foolishness; 6 I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all day long I go around mourning. 7 For my loins are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. 8 I am utterly spent and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart.
9 O Lord, all my longing is known to you; my sighing is not hidden from you. 10 My heart throbs; my strength fails me; as for the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me. 11 My friends and companions stand aloof from my affliction, and my neighbors stand far off.
12 Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek to hurt me speak of ruin and meditate on treachery all day long.
13 But I am like the deaf; I do not hear; like the mute, who cannot speak. 14 Truly, I am like one who does not hear and in whose mouth is no retort.
15 But it is for you, O Lord, that I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer. 16 For I pray, “Only do not let them rejoice over me, those who boast against me when my foot slips.”
17 For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever with me. 18 I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin. 19 Those who are my foes without cause are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully. 20 Those who render me evil for good are my adversaries because I follow after good.
21 Do not forsake me, O Lord; O my God, do not be far from me; 22 make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation. — Psalm 38 | New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVUE) New Revised Standard Version, Updated Edition. Psalm 38 by Charles H. Spurgeon
A psalm by David; to be kept in mind.
1 O Yahweh, do not angrily punish me or discipline me in your wrath. 2 Your arrows have struck me. Your hand has struck me hard. 3 No healthy spot is left on my body because of your rage. There is no peace in my bones because of my sin.
4 My guilt has overwhelmed me. Like a heavy load, it is more than I can bear. 5 My wounds smell rotten. They fester because of my stupidity. 6 I am bent over and bowed down very low. All day I walk around in mourning. 7 My insides are filled with burning pain, and no healthy spot is left on my body. 8 I am numb and completely devastated. I roar because my heart’s in turmoil. 9 You know all my desires, O Adonay, and my groaning has not been hidden from you. 10 My heart is pounding. I have lost my strength. Even the light of my eyes has left me.
11 My loved ones and my friends keep their distance and my relatives stand far away because of my sickness. 12 Those who seek my life lay traps for me. Those who are out to harm me talk about ruining me. All day long they think of ways to deceive me. 13 But I am like a person who cannot hear and like a person who cannot speak. 14 I am like one who cannot hear and who can offer no arguments.
15 But I wait with hope for you, O Yahweh. You will answer, O Adonay, my Elohim. 16 I said, “Do not let them gloat over me. When my foot slips, do not let them promote themselves at my expense.” 17 I am ready to fall. I am continually aware of my pain. 18 I confess my guilt. My sin troubles me.
19 My mortal enemies are growing stronger. Many hate me for no reason. 20 They pay me back with evil instead of good, and they accuse me because I try to do what is good.
21 Do not abandon me, O Yahweh. O my Elohim, do not be so distant from me. 22 Come quickly to help me, O Adonay, my savior. — Psalm 38 | Names of God Bible (NOG) The Names of God Bible (without notes) © 2011 by Baker Publishing Group.
