"O you who love the Lord, hate evil!" -Psalm 97:10 We hate the things that dishonor what we love. A husband will hate anyone who insults his wife. A patriot will hate anyone who threatens his country. Our affection toward one thing leads us to protect it form insult and injury. We can't really hate evil until we truly love God. Without seeing the awe-inspiring beauty of God's holiness, we can't really see sin for what it really is. Sin is not merely a rule broken. It is a slap in the face of the most powerful, most loving, most worthy being in all existence. It is an insult to the million ways God daily pours out HIs grace and love on all humanity. As the majesty and worth of God gets clearer to us, the ugliness of temptation and sinful rebellion also comes into focus. We begin to see sin for the unhappy and desperate tantrum that it is. Sad and futile and worthy to be hated.
