Psalm 51 (50 in the Septuagint). The title Ἐλέησόν με ὁ Θεός means “Have mercy on me, O God” (this is a psalm of repentance). Those familiar with Western choral music from the Church may recognise the Latin, Miserere mei, Deus, meaning the same thing. The style of this chant and that of the Western Church in, say, the time of Allegri, differs vastly in many melodic and harmonic respects.
