The Final Chapter - Preview
It was the day. When Caroline awoke, the only feeling was a heavy swamp of anticipation. She had been up early, couldn’t force herself back to sleep no matter how hard she had tried. She had spent an hour commandeering the bathroom, twirling her fingers in the water of the tub as she considered the outcome of the day. There had been no pleasantries between her and Klaus. There hadn’t been much of anything at all. He would sit out on that porch and she would continue to busy herself elsewhere. There were brief moments in the kitchen when they couldn’t avoid each other. She would feel his eyes on her and swallow her nerves to reciprocate. She would build up a thread of ideas in her head, what he might say or what he might do. But every time, he would just look away, his jaw tight. To say it had stung was understatement.
Still, she was resolved to attend the protest whether he would or not. The signs Bonnie had proposed making were a welcome distraction alongside her school work. She hadn’t been content with simple slogans on plain white boards, had spent at least an hour in the craft store staring at the various colours of permanent marker. She had considered glitter but had stunted that thought when her basket was so full already. Bonnie, Katherine, and even Stefan, had attempted to talk to her, to be her soundboard about all things Klaus. But she had managed to shut them down before they could even mention his name. The thing was: would she just be sealing her own fate by discussing it? Because try as she might, she wanted him and she wanted him to want her just as much.
We’re coming to the end, guys. I am very sad. Usually, I post previews the day before but today is different because I’m posting two days before. Come back on Sunday for the 23rd and final chapter and the epilogue ❤️ (and then a special announcement on Monday!)
