The "bearskin rug" automatic writing planchette from the College of Psychic Studies holdings, the sister planchette to the heart-shaped planchette I posted Monday. Incredible hardware and craftsmanship, though mysteriously incomplete in a way that still leave me questioning how users attached the pencil, which may have protruded on a thin bar from the nose of the planchette to keep the writing from being concealed by the planchette’s body. Period illustrations hint this may have been a companion piece to a French “Oui-ja” table produced around the turn of the century, or was possibly inspired by that product’s unique shape. Hudson Tuttle “Psychograph” or “Dial Planchette,” date unknown. Manufactured from the 1880s until the mid-1910s, the Psychograph has the distinction of being one of the world’s longest-manufactured spirit communication devices ever brought to market, as well as being one of the most diverse. To date, I’ve tracked just over a dozen survivors, and every. single. one. is different, either through color, font, border design, or back label content. It’s bonkers. I’ve been super picky about my posts this summer, and I’m not sure why. I’m always loathe to post even new pics of something I’ve posted before, even if the last one came years ago. And there’s no real reason for that given the constant short term memory churn of social media, so I’m trying to loosen that up and bring forward more artifacts that I know a ton of followers here haven’t seen before. And the Tuttle Psychograph is a great example of that. I own a few and picking a favorite is hard, but the dirtiest, grungiest one has a special place in my heart. It’s *seen* things. Ohio Spiritualist Hudson Tuttle produced these devices for a few decades, so it could be from the 1880s all the way up to the 1910s.
