There are lots of great depictions of the so-called “first Ouija board murder” committed by 15-year-old Mattie Turley. It was the night of November 8, 1933 in Prescott, Arizona, when she killed her father, Ernest Turley, with a shotgun blast, ostensibly at the command of the board’s messages, saying “the board could not be denied.” The thing is, there are conflicting reports of whether the family used a talking board or an automatic writing planchette in their séances, with some reporters very accurately describing the use of a writing planchette (as illustrated here), while others describing the Ouija, with one article even posting a photograph claiming it was the actual board used by the family. The latter is very likely true, but also a good illustration into the lingering presence of the planchette in the public consciousness as the default mode of spirit communication, even generations after Ouija’s introduction. So here’s that. The "bearskin rug" automatic writing planchette from the College of Psychic Studies holdings, the sister planchette to the heart-shaped planchette I posted Monday. Incredible hardware and craftsmanship, though mysteriously incomplete in a way that still leave me questioning how users attached the pencil, which may have protruded on a thin bar from the nose of the planchette to keep the writing from being concealed by the planchette’s body. Period illustrations hint this may have been a companion piece to a French “Oui-ja” table produced around the turn of the century, or was possibly inspired by that product’s unique shape.
