A Villain's Mastery Stroke (A Psycutlery Fanfic)
In honor of the release on Steam of Psycutlery, I've decided to post the first and so far only fanfic for the game, written by me.
~*~
Villainy was not a path for the weak of will, nor for the soft of heart. For all that she had not chosen this path but had it thrust upon her, Nailil knew this to her bones. She wanted great things in life, and when you were destined for great things, you had to ask yourself what you were willing to sacrifice in order to achieve them. A true villain needed to be ruthless, and what was ruthlessness, if not seeing a clear path to your goal and being unwilling to let anything impede you on that path?
Released earlier this year, Psycutlery is an indie game developed by Luke Tarlowe about a psychic space traveler defeating enemies with a mind-controlled spork. More than a decade in the making, it's something of a follow-up to Tarlowe's Mario-themed fangame, Psycho Waluigi.
Most surprisingly, the game is completely free, so check it out!
I once saw someone express this opinion on Deltarune Chapter 2 releasing for free and I still feel they had a point years later, so I wonder what you think of it. Do you think releasing games like Psycutlery for free reduces the perception of market value for games like them and harms people who cannot afford to release games like that for free?
I'm a bit confused by Psycutlery's choice to release for free, to be honest.
With Deltarune, I figure Toby Fox made so much money that he's releasing these games for free just because he can. Undertale catapulted him to basically celebrity status, to where he's just casually hanging out with dudes like Sakurai, guest composing music for big important games, which is to say nothing of merch and whatever else. Given that Deltarune games are remaining small scale and still basically only really employing Toby's friends, it's probably not putting much of a dent in whatever money he made from Undertale. Toby can live comfortably and does not engage in the race to become the richest guy on earth. The dream, really.
I feel like Psycutlery deserved better. I haven't spoken to anyone that worked on the game about this, but my thought process is that with how over-saturated the indie game market can be, pre-release promotion for Psycutlery didn't spread or generate enough hype. So rather than send it out to languish behind a price tag, they put it out in such a way that more people can appreciate the game and maybe build enough audience that a future game can be comfortably sold for money.
But again, that's just my assumption. On both fronts, actually. I do know people who worked on both Undertale and Psycutlery but I don't prod much into that kind of thing.
Just finished Psycutlery's story mode, and god damn this is such a good game
Luke Tarlowe did a fantastic job exploring the mechanics he came up with, and the story was both super funny and emotionally engaging the entire way through. I wouldn't typically expect the latter from a platformer, and I'm so pleasantly surprised by the former exclusively because this game is free!
Coming in at about 19 hours for the main story (give or take a little meandering for 100% completion), I definitely would have been willing to pay at least $15 or $20 for this game like Shovel Knight or Pizza Tower, but for free??? Even considering that it has a bit of a lack of polish, it would have been worth every penny with how much fun I had with it
The only mechanic that I wish Luke had found a way to retain from Psycho Waluigi was the ability to gain powers from grabbing enemies, but I didn't end up missing it too much by the end
Y'know, I never finished Psycho Waluigi...once I'm done with the bonus mode (which is effectively this game's Meta Knightmare for you Kirby fans), I'll try to revisit that if I'm not bogged down with too much else
Anyway, if you like platformers, go play Psycutlery at this link. This was honestly a really inspiring experience for me, and if I can manage to pull my life together, this is definitely going to become a major influence on me going forward. I hope I can impart something similar to someone else here!
