Joel Larsson’s Oversized Novelty Check is here at the office. What should we do with it...?
Red Aggro tops at Pro Tour Origins!
Well pro tour is raped up and the deck that took it all was Mono Red ran by Joel Larsson. You check out his deck and the other top 8 finishers here. http://magic.wizards.com/en/events/coverage/ptori/top-8-decklists-2015-08-01
Congratulations to PT Origins winner Joel Larsson
Mike Sigrist brought it to a full 5 games but a mull to 3 was too much
Mike Sigrist has edged out Froehlich for Player of the Year and US national captain! WOW!
Stepping up your game
It's 3am and what am I doing? I'll tell you. I am watching TV and going over deck lists from the top 8 of Pro Tour Origins. Like most magic fans I spent this weekend glued to twitch watching the Pro Tour coverage and being astonished by all the innovative new decks. like most I also found myself wondering how I get to the Pro Tour Circuit. Throughout coverage we heard a lot of different things but the thing that stuck out to me was that most of the top pros were on teams like that of Channelfireball and Team Ultrapro . Now for most of us we have a small or medium group of friends that we hang with or play with every Friday night at our local FNM but, most of us don't have a group that has the time or patience to sit down four to five days a week and play test. So where does that leave us? Most the pros work for online stores that produce magic content such as articles and deck techs so their able to play pretty much any time they want but, even they had to start somewhere. So how do we as average players find the time or a group for that matter? We could turn to Magic online ( MTGO) but that's expensive especially if your also playing paper magic also. So what options do we have? Cockatrice is a good cheap way to go but it has it's downfalls too. Most players on there build home brews to test and even though that is still practice it's not going to improve your skills enough. So what can we do to remedy this? First thing we can do is find at least one person of you group of buddies that is on the same schedule as you and wants to test on a regular basis. Second build a gauntlet of all the top decks in the format then systematically go through each deck playing each other deck in the gauntlet and be sure to test the mirror. If you don't have Cockatrice or a computer you can proxy up some decks and play test the same way. This will allow you to practice facing the decks that you will most likely go up against at your local FNM or any other tournament. If you do this you will soon find that you can pick out each and every decks week points and learn to exploit them . Once you have done this then you can shore up your sideboard to face the meta . How does this get us to the pros though? Well it doesn't directly but, it allows us to win more games and if we win more games we get more points. What do points do? Well points to the average play does nothing because we don't accumulate enough to matter but, if we go to bigger events or get to IQs or PTIQs then they start to matter. Once we get a lot of points we can get buys to events and buys equal wins lol. So now that we are winning more and playing more what do we do next? First we need to get out to more events and rack up tons of points but that can be very difficult as many events might be hours away or even across the country or world . So how do we get to the bigger events to get the points we need if we can't leave our state? Well we can go to local events and wait for opens to come to our state but, that doesn't seem like it would get us the points to get to where we are trying to go . Well it will eventually. You play a few big tournaments when you can and hopefully the practice pays off and you win and get invited to bigger tournaments ones that will fly you out to them or put you up in a hotel while you play. Once that happens you will get your name out there and people will start to wonder about you and what you have to say one the subject of magic and that's when you become a pro . Next you will have people coming to you for your insight and to write articles or even books or maybe if your good enough to help design magic itself. Well that's about all I have time for today. Hope you enjoyed this and FYI I'm not a pro but some day soon I hope . Thanks and have fun playing.

Ugh. I keep having to do chores and missing the Pro Tour. Can someone tell me what’s going on? Have the thopters taken over yet? Can we bow down to the artifact overlords?
