Lobelia puberula,

Is a species associated usually with wet or hydric habitats. I’ve found large populations in several mesic forest edges in Ohio; with that said, they are more common in the southern states. These photographs were taken at a highland fen in southern Kentucky.

This species can be easily identified but is often confused with it’s close relative, Lobelia spicata. Easy identifiers that can help you differentiate the two are the following: flowers appearing mainly on one side of the inflorescence, the horn lobes are usually not reflexed, the central lower lobe also has one white spot instead of the two. (Both L. spicata and siphilitica have two white spots.)

With the above said, wet vs. dry habitat should also help with identification and usually this species seems fairly pubescent.
