The Elections season is still in full swing! Pretty soon, the Elections Committee will be hosting three public chats to allow you to get to know the candidates. Each of the chats will last 90 minutes. Two of them will have three candidates in attendance, and the first chat will have all six–so each candidate will attend two chats total. Chats will take place in our public chatroom.

They are scheduled for:

Wednesday, July 26, at 7 p.m. UTC – All candidates (What time is Chat 1 where I live?)

Saturday, July 29, at 1 a.m. UTC – Gimena, Claire, and Danielle (What time is Chat 2 where I live?)

Sunday, July 30, at 4 p.m. UTC – Jessie, Milena and Erica (What time is Chat 3 where I live?)

During these chats, OTW members and volunteers will have the opportunity to ask the candidates questions not already covered in their platforms, bios, and Q&A responses, as well as to ask individual questions of specific candidates. If anyone isn’t able to ask all their questions by the end of a given chat, they’ll have an hour to submit their questions via the Elections form; Elections staffers will submit the questions to candidates either at future chats or separately to be added to the chat transcript.

We hope that you can join us for one or all of these chats! Read on for the technical details about how to access the chats.

For this, we’ll be using Discord, so if you haven’t heard about it, stay with us, and we’ll explain what you’ll need to know!  

The Elections Discord chat server is already active, but chatting capabilities will not be enabled until approximately one hour before the chats begin.

You’ll just need to provide a screen name, and you’ll be set. Once you enter, here’s what you will find:

1. Your username will be on this list on the right.

2. The list of rooms is on the left

3. The settings page is on the lower left  

As soon as you enter, you’ll be taken to the general room, where you’ll see the list of rules we expect everyone to follow, so we encourage you to read them carefully. Once you have done that, you can click on any of the other two rooms. 

On the ’candidate_chats’ room, you will be able to witness the debate between the candidates as it happens, but you won’t be able to directly write in there. You will be able to participate, though! That’s what the ’open_chat’ room is for. Please try to stay on the Elections topic, but you don’t need to ask for your turn to talk. 

A moderator will be watching the room, so when you want to ask a question to the candidates, you just need to signal the moderator with o/, the name of the candidate, and the question! Use o// if it’s a follow up question to what’s currently being discussed. Those signals will help the moderators spot the questions so the candidates can answer them!

If you want to change your userpic, or change the appearance of the chat a little bit, you can do so on the settings page.

*grumble grumble* I called someone cute in a public chat today and kept calling them adorable with another person doing the same, and I think we were doing some kind of baby talking to that person and they were cool until a little while later,

then they told us to stop and we did and I apologised and then I wrote to them in private chat and told them I’m sorry and that I would never do that again and to let me make it up to them,

they said that it was okay and to not do it again, and I really am sorry so I told them that I really respect them and that I don’t want them to feel disrespected again and that I was glad that they told me off,

they said cool and okay and then I said thank you and then I send them some cat photos,

I’m quite confused and worried right now, did they accept my apology? Can I talk to them with the same familiarity again? Have my feelings come across properly?

Ahh the right word was that I feel distressed,
