New study: 6-in-10 Americans believe protecting the environment is 'worth the cost'

A recent study from the Pew Research Center found nonpartisan support for strengthening environmental laws.

A new nonpartisan research study found that the majority of Americans, including Republicans, believe that "stricter environmental rules and regulations are worth the cost".

Just a regular reminder that climate change and environmental protection are not nearly as controversial or partisan as some powerful folks would like us to believe. There has been similar research findings that the majority of people in every country support policies to address climate change and also that people consistently underestimate how many other people care about climate change.

White House privately asks Republicans to stop talking about ‘mass deportations’ as public opinion turns on ICE: report

The president has promised to carry out the largest mass deportation campaign in the country’s history

White House Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair has reportedly urged Republicans to shift their messaging about President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda.

During House Republicans’ annual retreat in Doral, Florida, this week, Blair privately encouraged lawmakers to stop focusing their messaging on “mass deportations,” according to Axios. Instead, Blair reportedly suggested lawmakers focus on the deportation of violent criminals.

Following the report, Blair shared a message on social media voicing support for Republicans’ immigration agenda.

“Republicans want to keep deporting the violent/criminal illegals that Joe Biden & the Democrats in Congress let in,” he wrote on X. “Democrats want to shield them from deportation, which is why they unanimously support sanctuary cities. Republicans will get the violent criminals out. Democrats will throw the border back open.”

The people of Minnesota cetrainly won the battle, but only time will tell whether Trump's retreat is a tactical or a strategic one.

Even the corrupt authoritarian Trump administration has to pay attention to public opinion. They now know that Nazi Brown Shirt methods are hurting them in polling for the midterms. There need to be curbs on what Crazy Kristi Noem's Department of Homeland Security can do. This must be part of the overall debate in the US.

As Lawrence O’Donnell explains, Donald Trump is influenced only by poll numbers. Any opposition to Trump needs to keep that in mind. To influence public policy under Trump, we need to do things which cause MAGA approval to drop. Concerted nonviolent resistance like that in Minnesota has helped do that as it helped the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

In a way, local elections, special elections, and primaries are polls with official standing. So let's put a leash on MAGA and do that by continuing to overperform in elections. Paint every Republican orange so that they look like Trump.
