Book review: Nimona by N.D. Stevenson
It's a science fantasy graphic novel and was published in 2015. I read on queer liberation library. It took me a few hours to finish it. It was pretty popular when the movie first came out, and has been on my reading list since (although I still haven't seen the movie).
Main characters listed in most to least favorite: Blackheart, Nimona, Goldenloin
Points about the story:
- Blackheart's character is fun. I like morally gray characters like that, where they have strong morals but are willing to deviate from them if they must.
- I didn't really get the trans metaphor until near the ending.
- It's a cool detail that when Nimona kills it's normally not paid much attention to and the art style stays more simplistic, because it's not a big deal to her. But when Blackheart kills, it gets a lot more detailed, because that's a Huge Thing to him.
- The art style is quite nice.
- The ending is sad. I really thought Nimona would have a happy ending with them but it's sort of unresolved.
- Yippie, overthrowing the monarchy!!
The answers to these tests vary, so I'll just list them all. Bechedel test: pass. Advanced bechdel: fail. Ali Nahdee test: N/A. Deggans test: fail. Kumbalangi test: pass. Sexy lamp test: pass. Shukla test: fail. Sick dog test: pass. Vito russo test: pass.
5/10, I don't really have strong feelings about it. Here's the Wikipedia for it.
